The former Scotland international, who turns 36 in October, was a surprise inclusion in Phil Parkinson's starting XI for a Valley friendly against Ipswich.

A free agent after he left Rangers, he put in an accomplished display alongside Miguel Llera, prompting Parkinson to secure his services on a one-year deal.

Parkinson told the club website: "We're delighted we've agreed a deal for Christian to join us.

"I said after Tuesday's game that in an ideal scenario we'd like three out-and-out centre-backs plus a utility player, and Christian fills the utility role perfectly."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Darren Randolph has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal to stay at The Valley.

  2. Good signing. I do hope Charlton get taken over and sign some more players so that they can make a good campaign, resulting in automatic promotion. They are a big English club and don't deserve their present destiny.
