Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez on Sunday night insisted he wants Xabi Alonso to stay at Anfield.
Reports in Spain have indicated Real Madrid are as keen as ever to sign the midfielder.
But, following Sunday night's 3-0 loss to Espanyol, Benitez said: "He is our player and we want him to stay."
Benitez saw his side suffer a heavy defeat in a pre-season friendly on Sunday night, as former Chelsea forward Ben Sahar scored twice against a strong Liverpool team, captained by Steven Gerrard.
Alonso came off the bench for the closing minutes and it remains unclear whether he will start the season with Liverpool.
Benitez brushed off the setback of losing in a match which was set up to officially open Espanyol's new stadium.
"Nobody likes losing like that, but it's pre-season so it doesn't matter. I'm not worried about it," he said.
Asked if Javier Mascherano, who has been linked with Barcelona, will leave, Benitez said: "No."

Your boys took one hell of a beating.
Haaaaaaaaa !
raymand_78 is absolutely right, I'm a Man Utd fan, but I was shouting and cheering as much as any scouser when they did 'THE' comeback against Milan. We'll still take the record though, United champs (yet) again. Suck it up Liverpool!
I totally agree with mg914sy & c41ng0ku, I'm also a ManUtd fan. Obviously everyone would like to see their beloved team to win and not to loose, but have a little bit of respect to others. Would you speak to your own family members or even to your parents in such language. Football is a wonderful game that meets all kinds off people from various walks of life. So appreciate the game and appreciate each other with respect. I can't understand why YAHOO is not screening foul language...
RF - Keep both of them ! LFC got to win EPL this year ! If you sell them you won't be able to buy other players because their clubs will impose hefty transfer fee. If RM and Barcelona want them so badly, they have to pay $30m pounds.
HAHAHAHAHAHA the singing waiter laughs no more!
mg914sy, I must admit you're a true football fan. I am LFC supporter, we are enemies throughout the season, but in our heart we are one as football fans. Cheers
WHY ALL THE DIRTY COMMENTS,I AM MAN UTD THRU AND THRU BUT I RESPECT GOOD CLEAN COMPETION,
AND REALLY WOULD HATE TO SEE L'POOL LOSE SOME OF THEIR BEST PLAYERS,WHILE TEAMS LIKE MAN CITY TRY TO PURCHASE RESPECT
Here is my prediction of the EPL this season:
1- Chelsea
2- Arsenal
3- Man U
4- Liverpool
5- Man City
Chelsea are the only team is on the right track right now, They're playing so good under a new manager, Players are happy to play for him.
Man U is not the same strong team that they used to be because of Ronaldo and Tevez 's departure.
Liverpool have a problem with their best players in midfield that want to leave for another clubs.
Therefore, Arsenal will sneak in the second spot.
Chelsea will win the EPL easily without any serious threat.
I expect Man City will finish 5 with all the big signings that they have.
hahaha.. Liverpool is really a loser.. Benitez was begging like a dog to make Alonso stayed.
I'm here and you're over there,I'm not crying. Why on Earth should I be?
You really are a stupid Man.
Perspective and a happy life might be good for you sad sack.
