Patchy start for Rangers

Sun, 02 Aug 20:12:11 2009

The Emirates Cup got off to a tepid opening as Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions Rangers beat Paris St Germain 1-0 thanks to a scrappy winner from defender Madjid Bougherra.

The four-team tournament, which also includes Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, began with a minute's applause for Sir Bobby Robson, who died on Friday, aged 76. The tribute to the former England manager was immaculate with the travelling Scottish fans joining in enthusiastically.

Bougherra's goal came 15 minutes from time, with the former Charlton man heading in off the underside of the bar and the back of Claude Makelele following Pedro Mendes' corner.

The football served up by both sides was, for much of the game, typical of a pre-season affair.

The Scottish side were certainly not outplayed by their French opponents but a sharper cutting edge would have earned them a greater margin of victory.

  8. Lucky to finish in the top 6? Three things spring to mind, Dynamo Moscow, Sigma Olomouc and Steaua Bucharest. We should pack our bags and shut down if we dont win the SPL this year, even without any new signings
