Keegan quits Newcastle: report

Tue 02 Sep, 01:36 PM

NEWCASTLE, England (AFP) - Kevin Keegan has quit as manager of Premier League outfit Newcastle United after holding talks with club's board on Tuesday, Sky Sports News reported.

The 57-year-old was reportedly unhappy with the club's policy on transfers and has left after less than eight months in the job.

Keegan had hoped for three or four major signings but they failed to materialise as the transfer window closed at midnight on Monday.

Sky Sports News reported that Keegan did not take training Tuesday morning and was locked in talks with the club's board.

Keegan recently claimed James Milner would not be sold only for the midfielder to join Aston Villa in a 12-million-pound deal.

But having been unable to add to the signings of Argentinian pair Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez with several big-name stars Keegan is believed to have become disillusioned with his lot at Newcastle.

The club's only business on transfer deadline day was a 5.7-million-pound signing of Spanish striker Xisco and the loan signing of midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez.

Former England and Manchester City boss Keegan, who managed the club from 1992 to 1997, returned for a second time to St James' Park in January after the sacking of Sam Allardyce.

The club are currently 11th in the Premier League with just four points from their opening three games.

  10. Asley is just a lucky business man that thinks he can apply the same rules to football. KK is the most passionate of people re football and walks away when the tossers in the game make promises they don't keep. He may walk but he never hangs around for the big pay-off like the rest of the rubbish managing football.

  14. Employing Dennis Wise who played the game like a thug, and played second rate football and then to then hold such a position above Kevin Keegan and his coaching team is and will always be madness. Mr Wise must wake up every morning thinking its Xmas morning.

The measure of the hierachy at N.U.F.C was the footage of Mr Asheley in his club shirt pouring a pint down his throat....thats barrow boy leadership and Kevin Keegan is so right in walking away.

  15. Kevin keegan is a football man through and through, he really cares for his club and his players, unfortunately kevin is too trustworthy and wants to believe the best about people, na1eve it may be but its a sad state of affairs when the Kevin Keegans of this world are being driven out of proffessional football, what longtime chance did he have when he had diabolical Wise on his side

  18. oh dear kevin runs again the toon army are left bereft. history is a great thing to have but hard to live up to. newcastle will be lucky to make midtable this season but the fans will demand more from a mediocre club that hasnt the money to compete and i predict kev will not be the only newcastle manager to resign or get the boot this season

  19. This is by far the most entertaining and funny story of the day. Keegan was built up by the toon fans and media alike as the saviour of Tyneside. Keegan is a serial quitter and Newcastle are serial underachievers whoever is behind them. The so called toon army are nothing more than fat slobs who think they are funny when they expose their unsightly blubber. I just wish Newcastle would stop pretending to be the big club of the north east. That's history. Now its Boro and Sunderland leading the way. Joey Barton is well suited to the black and white shirt, all posturing, all promise and no substance. The way he smirked after that tackle at the weekend will be the lasting image for Newcastle this season.

  20. Ryanhall, where do you get the idea it's your club and has been for 40 years. All fans from all clubs think it is their club. That is the problem, calling football businesses clubs. Even before your 40 years, football businesses were calling themselves clubs to fool you idiot supporters into believing you were part of something. You just pay to watch, and that is it. FULL STOP. If it's your club and you don't like something, then do something about it. Why not use fan power and just don't pay to go and watch them for a few weeks. You will soon get your way. Same with England putting their games only on pay tv. Well, just boycott Wembley, don't go anymore. As a fan, I will watch one game at Wembley during the qualifying. Other then that I want to watch on TV for free. Now I won't even go to Wembley once. I put my bum where my mouth is. What about the rest of you
