Int Football - Lampard, Terry, Cole miss training

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Sep 17:32:00 2008

Chelsea trio Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole all missed training on Tuesday morning as England continue their preparations for the World Cup double-header with Andorra and Croatia.

2008 England Frank Lampard - 0

Lampard (pictured) sustained a dead leg in the Blues' draw with Tottenham on Sunday, although he should be available for Saturday's meeting with the part-timers of Andorra in Barcelona.

In addition neither Terry, who has a bug, nor Ashley Cole, who sustained a bang on his left knee, are injury doubts for the weekend.

Manchester United's Wes Brown, who also missed training as a precaution after reporting a minor knee injury, is expected to be available too.

With Lampard sidelined and Steven Gerrard ruled out completely after undergoing minor surgery on a groin problem, there was further focus on Fulham's Jimmy Bullard during the training session.

The 29-year-old received his first England call-up from coach Fabio Capello, testament to the hard work Bullard has put in after spending 15 months on the sidelines with a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in September 2006.

Although the former Wigan player had not previously been considered by pundits as a potential England candidate, he has impressed with his performances for the Cottagers.

Capello is looking to avoid the kind of personal abuse directed at predecessor Steve McClaren when England last played Andorra at the Olympic Stadium, when a goalless first half led to a torrent of vitriol being heaped on the England coach.

Victory on Saturday is taken for granted but a morale-boosting performance would be a major plus with group favourites Croatia to tackle next.

  2. I think all England needs is a striker who can put the ball in the back of the net, even if he is a southen fairy or a northen monkey! only joking around.

we have an average bunch of players with the exception of Rooney and Gerrard, but we dont have a lot to look forward in the future, especialy with all this influx of overseas talent!

plus in todays game managers think its to much of a risk to play attacking... its just going to be the same old England, draw or a loss.... plenty of long ball and a willingness to stay in there own half!.... boring... thank God for pubs and alchol! haha

  3. Dear Northerners

I know it's difficult for you to write the Queens English without swearing, and you even have difficulty in doing that.

Please go back to school and start again and try to compose a sentence without a swear word in it. I know it will be difficult for you, but please try as there are lots of young southern children who read these articles and it is difficult to explain to them what you are on about .
    Thanking you for your efforts.

Southern Softie who is able to read and write without swearing

  7. At this rate England are never gonna win a trophy. Anyway they are a pretty bad team but Rooney and Gerrard could actually try and play how they play with their clubs then maybe just maybe they would win a Euro Cup or even more unlikely a SECOND World Cup. Personally i think that Rooney and Gerrard are top class.

  12. In view of the fact that England games are no longer free to view, then all England fans should boycott games at Wembley. It's time we used our financial power to stop the friggin idiots who run our game taking it away from us. It's time to fight back and club and national level. Only how do you get to tell the whole world to join the boycott?

  13. david s shoudnt you get back to sweeping up?

From phillip, on Tue 2 Sep 3:57PM
  14. If people in the north see England as a southern thing then maybe you should start producing some decent footballers again. That will solve the problem. Whenever there has been a majority of good northerns then the England team was full of notherners, or maybe you choose not to remember. Apart from which do you think a friggin Italian who knows nothing about this country could care less where a player comes from, as long as he thinks he is good enough, right? As the manager is Italian that proves that the north just don't have enough good players at this time. Now stop being a friggin stupid southern hater, that just makes hate you in return. Idiot
