Powell powers to 9.72s win

Asafa Powell set the second-fastest 100 metres time in history when he won the Lausanne Super Grand Prix in 9.72 seconds.

ATHLETICS Powell - 0

The time was set with a windspeed of +0.2 seconds to add further to Powell's achievement.

Olympic bronze medallist Walter Dix of the United States came second, 0.2 seconds behind Powell, while another Jamaican, Nesta Carter, was third.

"After all my problems this year I'm satisfied with my performance tonight," Powell said afterwards.

"It's also great to set a new personal record."

The Jamaican former world-record holder was crushed by compatriot Usain Bolt in the Beijing Olympics final in August, but he responded with a superb run of his own in Switzerland.

Powell, 25, recently admitted to struggling on the big occasions - he has lost out to Bolt, and Americans Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin, in all the major finals.

But Powell has run six of the top ten fastest 100 metres races of all time, and he shares second on the all-time list with Bolt, who ran 9.72 in New York this season before his own Olympic, world-record run of 9.69.

Jamaica continued their Olympic dominance of the sprints by posting one-twos in the women's 100m and 400m, with Delloreen Ennis-London also winning the 100m hurdles.

Bolt did not take part in the 100m but won the 200 in 20.63, although slowed down in the final stages of the race, leading to jeers from the crowd.

The 21-year-old sprint sensation said he was happy for team-mate Powell, who ran the anchor leg in their 4x100 relay win in Beijing.

"I'm happy for Asafa tonight. He has always been there, but he's looking pretty good now. There are a lot of guys to think about in the 100 metres," Bolt said.

LaShawn Merritt of the United States followed up his Olympic gold with a victory in the men's 400m.

There were no wins for British athletes, although Olympic silver medallist in the high jump, Germaine Mason, came second with a leap of 2.32m.

Lisa Dobriskey and Tasha Danvers came third in the 1,500m and 400m hurdles respectively.
