Premier League - City break record for Robinho

Manchester City made a stunning late swoop on transfer deadline day to sign Brazil forward Robinho from under the noses of Chelsea in a deal worth a British record £32.5 million.

The Brazil international has penned a four-year deal at Eastlands.

Manager Mark Hughes told City's official website: "I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho.

"I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.

"I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity. This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City Football Club."

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said: "We have agreed to sell the player for human reasons, and for footballing reasons and for an important quantity of money.

"After consulting with the technical staff we have decided it was the best decision for the group and the club. The fact the player accepted the offer from City proves he isn't moving for sporting reasons.

"It's isn't Real's policy to sell players but we thought it was for the best."

Robinho made it clear he wanted to leave just over a week ago, unhappy that the club had considered selling him to help finance their failed bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, and coach Bernd Schuster left him out of the squad for Real's last two matches.

The German had insisted he wanted the player to stay, especially after Real failed to land David Villa from Valencia and Santi Cazorla from Villarreal last week, saying he thought he could recover the player.

But Robinho burned his bridges with another appeal to the media to be allowed to leave on Sunday.

"Schuster thought until yesterday he could recover the player's morale but it wasn't to be. Robinho has been badly advised," Calderon added.

Robinho burst on to the scene as an 18-year-old when he helped Santos win their first Brazilian championship in 2002.

His trickery, skills and physique led to comparisons with former Santos great Pele and eventually attracted the attention of Real Madrid.

Robinho pressured Santos for a move to Real and after a lengthy tug-of-war transfer saga, the Brazilian club relented and agreed to sell the player to the Spanish giants in August 2005.

Classed as the new Galactico when he arrived at the club, Robinho made a dazzling debut as a substitute in the 2-1 victory over Cadiz in the opening game of the season but then went on to struggle for the remainder of his first campaign in Europe.

He won his first Spanish league title under coach Fabio Capello in 2007, but often featured as a substitute and only really took off last season when he helped Real to their second consecutive championship, scoring 11 goals in 32 outings.

Robinho is a regular in the Brazilian national side and played an instrumental role in their triumph in the 2007 Copa America, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with six goals.

  2. Robinho has gone to Man City as he and his representatives realised that Chelsea were not a real big club ! they are owned by a russian fantasy football lover who hired a devious bumbling idiot in Peter, I can't sign a player to save my life Kenyon!

Chelsea only think they are a big club! they have very little history to attract truely great players. Chelsea will struggle to sustain their current position especially when abramovich gets board of his toy.

Well done city, now go and break the so called big 4 dominance!

  3. As a Chelsea supporter, I must say, Kenyon dropped the proverbial ball on this one. Im a tad disappointed.

  4. I really admire Robinho. He is a man of his words. i am very proud of him. How would real Madrid be thinking of offloading robinho to buy Ronaldo? For me Ronaldo and Robinho are both great stars. Except that Ronaldo may have made the greatest impact. Real Madrid think that they can fool everybody all the time. Robinho though still young has shown that he is not a coward like some others like Ronaldo who will say one thing today and tommorrow he will be saying another. A man should be confident enough to stand by his words when they have been revealed. Robinho, it doesnt really matter where you go to. You are a star and you will continue to be a star. i am confident that you will do well at city. It is a way towards greater thing s to come in life. You have taught Calderon and co that they cannot use you for football politics. I hope they will learn their lessons. i am still waiting for when you soon join my beloved club chelsea. Welcome to England where football is played to the fullest. The most lucrative league in the whole world. Goodluck. Mostbsenior from rome in Italy

  5. Honestly left to me, Robinho has really made a mistake of his careerby going to Man city. this is a club that do fight for a place in Euro Cup competition and never smell champions league. He decided to go to man city where no one will see him shine unlike when he was in madrid. Lets ask him how many foreign fans does man city has unlike the Big four? Let him stay there sucking his thumb like a baby

  6. Im thinking he signed for City because he burned his bridges at Madrid, and because there was only the City option 4 him b4 the deadline,he chose to go there rather than rot on the side for Real

  10. man city is used to buying old horses, they simply won"t win u any bet. robinho and ronaldinho, well what a a warm place to get buried. welcome to the city of manchester"s cementary.

  11. This has really annoyed me because Chelsea (i'm a chels fan) have been trying for him for weeks then Man City get him in a few hours! Real Madrid only sold him to Eastlands cos they know City aren't a threat to them in the Champions league or whatever. (And to annoy Chelsea I bet). Man City are just showing off cos they've got a bit of money from Abu Dhabi. First a bid for Berbatov then Robinho!!!

Well, I hope Robinho coming to the Premiership will just be a springboard for a move to Chelsea in a couple of years! At least if he turns out to be another foreign waste of money like Shevchenko it'll be City's problem.

  12. Well Done Man City, you managed to steal Robinho from us and good luck with him as i am sure it was his desire to join you all along. Lets face it with such star quality in a team full of players that were obviously fringe players at their former clubs and a club manager who is unable to make any decisions with regards to who plays for your team, being on the golf course is more important surely?... I'm sure the Champions league beckons!

Anyway, i think the first thing Mark Hughes will have to explain to Robinho is why the shirt is sky Blue and not Red as has been pointed out in previous comments.

Unlike Abramovich who actually makes a point of going to most games and does have a keen interest in football, it will be interesting to see if Manchester City will fair so well given the corporate struggles that have plagued both Manchester United and Liverpool in recent months. Lets not forget that these Arabian consortium's were far more interested in purchasing Liverpool due to the History of the club and the global marketing potential that is associated with a team like that.

Anyway, it will be funny to see if Christiano will be tempted to join City as he has declared on how much he wants to play for Real Madrid, that must mean he's heading to you as well.

  15. Sorry Maxwell. It true though! Liverpool, Arsenal, Man utd, Man city and 15 others all are valued at 10 times that of chelsea! there supporters show pride and belief weighing in at so much more than that of a poxy russian billiainare! Give me a ticket to the "supporters" end of stamford bridge and i would not go back! wuld much rather sit in the family stand at bristol rovers! Might have a real conversation with a real fan!

  18. It's a gain-gain scenario; Robinho wants a new home and Real Madrid needs the cash. You might question if Man. City is really what he sees as a new home but understand: he can't wait till the next transfer window in January! The lad feels unwanted.
