Born Armthorpe, Yorkshire, February 14 1951.

1968: Joined Scunthorpe United as apprentice.

1971: Transferred to Liverpool for £35,000.

1972: England debut v Wales in Cardiff.

1977: Left Liverpool after winning the European Cup final against Borussia Moenchengladbach, moving to German first division side Hamburg for £500,000.

1980: Transferred to Southampton for £420,000.

1982: Last England game as substitute v Spain in Madrid, 1982 World Cup. Won 63 caps, scored 21 goals. Transferred to Newcastle for 100,000 pounds.

1984: Retired from playing in style, helping Newcastle win promotion to the old First Division and leaving St James's Park by helicopter from the centre circle after his last match.

1992: Returned to soccer in February as manager of Newcastle United and three months later signed a three-year contract.

1993: Newcastle promoted to Premier League as division one champions.

1996: Newcastle finish runners-up to Manchester United in the Premier League after blowing a 12-point lead. Breaks then world transfer record by paying Blackburn £15 million for England striker Alan Shearer.

1997: Resigns as manager of Newcastle on January 8. Appointed chief operating officer at English third division club Fulham, with Ray Wilkins as manager.

1998: Wilkins sacked as manager, Keegan takes over and leads side to promotion the following season.

1999: Keegan named new England coach initially on a part-time basis in February succeeding Glenn Hoddle. Makes winning start with 3-1 win over Poland to reignite England's Euro 2000 qualifying campaign. England scrape into Euro 2000 finals after 2-1 aggregate win over Scotland in the playoffs.

2000: England eliminated from Euro 2000 at group stages. Resigns on October 7 after 1-0 defeat by Germany at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier. England record under Keegan: Played 18, won seven, drawn seven, lost four.

2001: Keegan appointed manager of second division Manchester City. Gains promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge. City finish ninth in 2002-03.

2005: Leaves City by mutual consent on March 11.

2008: Keegan, who has not coached since leaving City, is appointed Newcastle manager in place of Sam Allardyce who left on January 9.

2008: Endures a difficult beginning to his second spell in charge of Newcastle, taking nine games to record his first victory, but eventually guides the club clear of relegation worries and records a 12th place finish.

Honours: Football League Championship medals 1972-73, 1975-76, 1976-77; F.A. Cup winner 1974; European Cup winner 1977; UEFA Cup winner 1973, 1976; Footballer of the Year 1975-76; European Footballer of the Year 1977-78, 1978-79; PFA Player of the Year 1981-82.

  8. i am a man utd fan and should hate keegan but just can't he is a class act and good for footie. n/castle should hold on to this gem as he is n/castle f.c. I love fergie coz hes a manager for the fans and the club and he outshines any club politics and his is the rock of the club. i would image a n/castle fan believe this of their manager and hope that the fans and their hero manager outshine any politics
