Premier League - Riera in, Finnan and Voronin out

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Sep 09:32:00 2008

Albert Riera has completed his move to Liverpool from Espanyol while Steve Finnan and Andriy Voronin have been offloaded.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 La Liga - Albert Riera, Espanyol - 0

Riera, 26, has signed a four-year contract at Anfield after choosing Rafael Benitez's side over a host of other clubs including neighbours Everton.

Riera, who has been given the number 11 shirt at Anfield, has previously played in the Premier League in the 2005-06 season when he was on loan at Manchester City.

"Riera has the qualities we were looking for," Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez told the club's website.

"He's a left footer who normally plays on the left wing, he's good in the air, strong, powerful and a good crosser of the ball. He also had offers from other English clubs but he said no to them because he wanted to come and play for us.

Finnan, 32, lost his place in Rafa Benitez's team this season after the pre-season signings of full-backs Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degen.

The right-back joined Espanyol for an undisclosed fee on a two-year contract and is expected to make his debut against Getafe on September 21.

The Barcelona-based club announced the news on their website, saying: "Liverpool have transferred Steve Finnan to Espanyol. The Ireland international has committed himself for two seasons.

"Finnan is with the Republic of Ireland to play on Saturday against Georgia and on the following Wednesday against Montenegro.

"The defender will then go to Liverpool afterwards to collect all his things and will move to Barcelona between the 14th and 15th (September) and as such will be available to Tintin Marquez ahead of the third game of the season."

No fee was mentioned for the former Fulham, Notts County and Birmingham defender.

Meanwhile Voronin will spend a year with Bundesliga outfit Hertha after failing to establish himself at Anfield.

"Andriy Voronin has today (Monday) agreed a one-year loan deal with German side Hertha Berlin," Liverpool's website confirmed.

And in a third piece of business concluded on transfer deadline day, the Merseyside club completed the permanent transfer of Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi on a two-year contract.

The 18-year-old spent last season on loan with the Reds and was a part of the club's treble winning reserve side.

Winger Jermaine Pennant will remain at Anfield despite being the subject of late interest from Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

  3. Prediction. Liverpool will not finish in the top four and will not win any trophies this season. It's obvious that Benitez has not bought well in the transfer market. Of his best players he already had gerrard and Carragher. He didn't have to buy Macherano until he had actually seen him play for a season. his only good buy so far is Torres but we have to see how he gets on in future with his mix and match team mates. I believe Benitez will be gone at the end of this season and the americans will sell as they have no Champions League cash next season.
P.S. there is a lot of talk about the top four. But if our teams have a bad run it may be we are reduced to only three entrants for the next Champions League. even more pressue then on the top clubs.

  5. Oh RAFA, A good coach but I'm beginning to get dissapointed with his tactics. You cannot afford to WASTE good players like this!!! KEANE aint a winger, but should be upfront in his spot. And the dribbling skills of BABEL should be utilised to the max. Give PLESSIS some playing time. If RAFA dont change things, I doubt they'll even make top 5 this season. I say BABEL and KEANE lead the attack for now.

RAFA needs ta WAKE up an sort things out an fast we have no decent LEFT or RIGHT BACK, PLAYERS STRIKERS on the WING when we have WINGERS who come with BIG expections but ffailed to deliver!!

Same old story with LFC buy loads of players an 1 in 5 is a good buy...............RAFA do you honestly think the YANKS are going togive you more 33 to waste.........coz that's what you have been doing with most of the £££ they have given you!!

Won the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE in your first season (mind you we got LUCKY)after that it's been DOWNHILL all the way!!

  8. Future is what we Liverpool fan wanted, the past is over. With current squad, we really have a good chance of achieving the 18 years lost (EPL title). Have faith Kop! Rafa is a right choice, at least we have additional FA Cup and the most of all, the Chiampion L Tropy (5 times) to show. No other team in England has surpassed us yet. Tske pride and keep up the support.

  9. Gareth who, pqkc? Would that be a freudian slip or has Barry signed for the fools afterall? lol
Apart from that, you have to say that midfield looks terrible and have no chance of containing any of the other top 3 midfields.

  11. With Torres and Gareth injured, it is only time for a reformation. I would say
midfield - Dossena, Alonso, Mascherano, Riera
Forwards - Keane behind Babel upfront.4-4-1-1
Aganist Man U, it is not safe to be too open. Control and break them at the midfield is essential to contain them.
Babel can create havoc with his dribbling and Keane with his experience could even defend in the front and crete trouble for them.

  13. To Luxy. Are all Gunners fans as ignorant as you are? I'm a Liverpool fan, but I'm not an idiot. I know Arsenal is a great club with some superb players. I also know Liverpool is a great club with some superb players. I also think both the Reds and Gunners don't quite have enough to battle Chelsea and United for top spot in the EPL. The Gunners have a better team approach and could make a run, while Liverpool has some great players who are used poorly by a very mediocre manager. I think Wenger is vastly superiour to Benitez. I think Man City, Tottenham and Villa will push Liverpool and Arsenal for third and fourth. I hope Benitez wakes up and starts playing a consistent lineup, but I'm not holding my breath.

  14. looking at the squad, I believe riera is going to be a good addition. Finally I see options. I personally belive that the first team should look like this
    Reina
    Carragher - Syrtel - Agger - Dossena
    Babel - Masherano - Riera
    Gerrard - Keane
    Torres
This gives us the ability to play 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2
with this adaptability other teams will be kept guessing.
However Rafa is more likely to keep Kuyt in insead of Babel.
We also have good options for replacements
Cavalieri can replace Reina if nessacary
Aurelio, Degan, Hyypia and Arbeloa can fall in at the back
Kuyt, Plessis, Alonso, Leiva and El Zhar are good replacements in midfield
    with N Gog up front
So far this season I dont think we have played well but if we start to gel I believe we can at least be up there challenging. However with the team we have got if Rafa does not produce this season then I can see a new manager coming in before the next.
Hears hoping for a top two finish at least this year.

  16. We have spent a lot of money over the years on players.. some good some not and you all can dispute which is which but it is not really fair comparing our Yankee owners investment to the Dubai groups first purchase... See how much money the put in over the years... We have spent some dosh don't forget...

I like the fact we got a naturally wide left sided player but it would have been nice if it was a Spanish 1st team player... this guy doesn't even start for his country but I guess he might fit into our squad... Here is hoping and lets try backing our Team better on here... We sound like TOFFEE fans on here crying about our gaffa and team.. Come on You Reds!!! Show us your pride!

  18. Whats the point of having a youth academy to invest in nurtured talents? I really dont think Benitez is doing anything different to Houllier, but at least Houllier wasn't spending as much money. So are these managers really trying to say players of the calibre of Matteo, Thompson, Murphy and all these guys were never good enough to play for Liverpool? I'm sorry but of the numerous Benitez signings very few of them are really better than what L'pool's academy is capable of producing. Of the Spanish players I'll only name Alonso and Torres (I exclude Reina bcos he's average, and L'pool are use to having sub-standard keepers, so Reina is better than 'em). Its all an expensive experiment, we buy players and sell them after a couple years. No continuity, its a mess. The club needs direction and a manager with direction. What surprises me is that there was a lot more continuity with Benitez at Valencia. There was a season where he only bought one player, Rufete. And he won the La Liga twice in three seasons. Liverpool need that continuity and consistency, rather than randomly changing team that takes half a season to gel and start performing. No wonder he never knows what his best team is. Yet we Liverpool fans keep saying we'll win the league. When will it bl**dy happen?

  20. Luxy, yes arsenal are a good team, but u are seriuosly delliuded if u think there young squad can beat any of the other top 4 teams, without fabregas you have very little to boast about in midfield, maybe if u kept hold of helb and falmini... but u didnt, as for rosicky if he ever gets injury free he wuld have forgotten how to play!
