Premier League - Team of the week

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Sep 01:05:00 2008

This weekend Shaun Wright-Phillips did his best to disprove the old football adage that you should never go back, while Amdy Faye has clearly chosen a career in the wrong sport...

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Manchester City Shaun Wright-Phillips - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Shaun Wright-Phillips must have been kicking himself last night as it hit home how much he has wasted the last three years of his career at Chelsea, but he'll find solace in the fact that his two-goal haul on his City return makes him our Player of the Week. Only Fabio Capello knows why Jonathan Woodgate isn't in the England squad after his imperious display against Chelsea, while Didier Zokora marked his return to midfield with his best ever performance in a Spurs shirt. Amr Zaki can count himself very unlucky not to be joining Wigan team-mate Luis Antonio Valencia in the top XI. David James's penalty save edges him into the side ahead of Robert Green, who also stopped a spot-kick.

1. David James (Portsmouth) - 39

2. Glen Johnson (Portsmouth) - 36

3. Gael Clichy (Arsenal) - 34

4. Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur) - 40

5. Richard Dunne (Manchester City) - 37

6. Javier Mascherano (Liverpool) - 39

7. Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) - 43

8. Didier Zokora (Tottenham Hotspur) - 38

9. Jermain Defoe (Portsmouth) - 42

10. Robin van Persie (Arsenal) - 41

11. Luis Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic) - 40

FLOPS OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Amdy Faye's two-footed lunge on Mohamed Shawky wouldn't have looked out of place in the long jump pit, and the Stoke midfielder has been rightfully condemned by the press, with the Mirror giving him a mark of just two out of 10. Not quite the unbeatable eight awarded to Martin Taylor last season, but a formidable mark nonetheless. Hull's spanking at the hands of Wigan provides just three players for the Flops XI, though Dean Marney and Richard Garcia both matched Giovani dos Santos's mark. Striker Shola Ameobi gets a bit of a raw deal as he quite clearly wasn't fully fit, as does Roque Santa Cruz, who was withdrawn after half an hour with a calf injury.

1. Boaz Myhill (Hull City) - 26

2. Samuel Ricketts (Hull City) - 20

3. Carl Dickinson (Stoke City) - 21

4. Wayne Brown (Hull City) - 17

5. Danny Collins (Sunderland) - 22

6. Amdy Faye (Stoke City) - 12

7. Grant Leadbitter (Sunderland) - 23

8. Seyi Olifinjana (Stoke City) - 22

9. Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers) - 24

10. Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United) - 24

11. Giovani dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur) - 24
