The men's singles form book continued to be strictly respected at the US Open on day two with fourth seed Novak Djokovic and seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both cruising into the second round.
There were straight-sets wins too for 10th seed Fernando Verdasco , 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez and for 17th seed Thomas Berdych as most of the day's drama was being played out in the women's tournament.
The Serb, runner-up at Flushing Meadows in 2007, was on top of his game as he beat the Croat for the fourth time in their five meetings.
Early breaks in each of the first two sets put Djokovic in charge and he broke once more in the eighth game of the third to clinch a comfortable victory.
Djokovic will next play Carsten Ball of Australia, who advanced past fellow-qualifier Juan Pablo Brzezicki of Argentina.
The 2008 Australian Open champion revealed afterward that he had reached agreement with retired American player Todd Martin to join his coaching team for Flushing Meadows.
Tsonga was even more expedient, defeating American wild card Chase Buchanan 6-0 6-2 6-1 in a mismatch out on the Grandstand Court.
The 24-year-old from Le Mans failed to get past the third round in his two previous appearances at Flushing Meadows, but he won the boy's title here in 2003 and he is the only player to defeat Roger Federer since May.
That came in the quarter-finals at the Montreal Masters, where he remarkably won from 1-5 down in the deciding set.
The Frenchman, runner-up to Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open, wrapped up the first set in just 23 minutes and it was the second game of the set before Buchanan opened his account by holding serve.
That was but a brief respite for the home player though as Tsonga powered away again losing just two more games as he went through in 78 minutes.
Tsonga will next play Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who defeated Fabio Fognini of Italy 7-5 7-6 (6) 6-4 with a quarter-final against Rafael Nadal a possibility if the seeding goes to plan.
Spain's Verdasco served up 12 aces and hit 36 winners on the way to a 7-5 6-4 7-5 win over Benjamin Becker of Germany, while Berdych of the Czech Republic, seeded 17, saw off Wayne Odesnik of the United States 7-5 6-4 6-4.
Gonzalez, whose best showing at the US Open was a quarter-final appearance in 2002, saw off Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-3 6-3 in an all-Chilean clash.
There were only two slight diversions from the script.
Veteran Ecudoran Nicolas Lapentti upset Federer's Swiss doubles parter and close friend Stanislas Wawrinka, the 19th seed, 4-6 3-6 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3) 6-3.
And American qualifier Jesse Witten, a former collegiate standout, stunned 29th-seeded Russian Igor Andreev 6-4 6-0 6-2.
The 26-year-old from Florida is more accustomed to playing on the secondary Challenger Tour and he was given little chance of upsetting Andreev who, in last year's fourth round, became just the second player to take Federer to five sets in the course of his 35-match unbeaten streak at Flushing Meadows.
But Witten took command from the start against the visibly out-of-sorts Russian and he kept the pressure on throughout.

I'm french and I used to play a lot when I was a kid. Hit some balls with Sidorenko and entered some tournaments where Chardy and Murray played too. Born in 87 but nobody spoke about Djoko in those days. So yes i think I can say I know tennis well and how hard this sport is. And that's why I appreciate Murray's game cos people too often think he's just putting the ball in the court and waiting for unforced errors. It's not true. He mixes his game so well, is sometimes patient and sometimes goes for incredible groundstrokes shots or serve and volleys.
I don't have a favourite, too many to choose from. It is the contest that I love and the artistry these guys express on the court. Glad to see someone else enjoying the game instead of criticising it and the players.
Couldn't agree more!. Your knowledge of the game is pretty good, do you play???? Where are you from mate???
comment 23 : thanks mate !
I think we're just lucky to live this tennis era. Plenty players to be fan of : Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Roddick, Hewitt, Monfils, Tsonga... Big personnalities, great games though different.
Everybody loves you sanchez.santos, for your intelligence, good looks, witty humor, tennis knowledge, kind heart, compasion and thanks for helping put things into perspective. What would we do without you????????
teapsky, BRAVO!
I'm begining to like Novak, cant help but admire his amiable personality. I wish him good luck at the Open.
James W or whatever you call yourself, how can you be so full of malice for your fellow human beings and wishing them ill luck? You should know that what goes around comes around, you'll get a full those of whatever you wish others!
Why was Ljubicic unimpressive? Because Djokovic returned his fast serves with ease and aggressivity. He served extremely well too, mixing things up. Novak turned this match easy, not the other way round. I've seen Djokovic a lot this year and this was an impressive performance. The Djokovic haters should sometimes shut up and admit he's a fantastic player when he's on the top of his game. Nadal and Federer aren't my favourite players but I'm clever enough to say they are fantastic players too. Same goes with Murray. If you cannot see the genious in his game, then you don't know tennis enough to comment. Cheers !
I hate both Murray and Djcheatovic as much as each other....
NOLE SRBINE, razbi ih sve tamo......
I would say unimpressive Ljubicic
Terrible performance by Ljubicic. The guy was useless. I wonder why he has come out there anyway. Passive, tired, unhappy, uncomfortable thinking sooner he is finished the better it will be for him.
Very good work Nole :-) Although Ljubicic wasn’t playing his best, truly !
But great serve and very few unforced errors for Novak.
well done and will continue, I believe !
impressive start? so what? he still can't win the US open...
Ray V who are u? Haas even he past there can't beat Djokovic this time, becouse Novak will open his eye's
and Game Over! Baby Ray.!
Verdasco is the future of tennis. Flushing Meadows - Nadal's last hurrah. Murray's the real nº1. Fed was gifted his titles this year. Simon Reed is the best observer. None of these statements is more true than any of the others. Prove.
Nole rocks!
I find myself asking myself why I hate Djcheatovic so much and I remind myself that it's because he's a fake I just hope he dosen't corrupt Todd Martin....
NOT SPANISH NOT LAZY JUST FUNNY !!!
