Transfers - Deadline day: Round-up

Eurosport - Wed, 02 Sep 10:16:00 2009

Tottenham swooped for Portsmouth's Croatia midfielder Niko Kranjcar and Everton signed Dutch defender Johnny Heitinga on transfer deadline day.

FOOTBALL Niko Kranjcar Portsmouth - 0

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp moved for Kranjcar after Croatian playmaker Luka Modric suffered a broken leg, which will keep him out for six weeks, against Birmingham on Saturday.

Everton signed Heitinga from Atletico Madrid for £6 million and agreed a five-year contract.

The 25-year-old follows French defender Sylvain Distin to Goodison Park as Toffees boss David Moyes strengthens his back-four after Joleon Lescott's move to Manchester City.

Atletico could eventually receive £7 million for the Holland international due to clauses in the terms of the deal.

Aston Villa spent £5 million pounds to sign Wales defender James Collins from West Ham - but Martin O'Neill's side were forced to wait for confirmation that they have signed Manchester City skipper Richard Dunne.

Villa submitted their paperwork to the Premier League an hour before the 5pm deadline, but the league have requested more time to ratify the deal; it is now likely to become official on Wednesday.

The move for Collins did go through in time, however, with the 26-year-old putting pen to paper on a four-year contract. He could make his debut against local rivals Birmingham on September 13.

"It's been a mad 24 hours since coming up here but I'm delighted to have it all sorted. It's a fantastic setting. I just can't wait to get cracking now," Collins said.

"Aston Villa is a massive club so, after coming here looking around the place it didn't take a lot of persuading on my part."

Portsmouth boss Paul Hart made a triple swoop for Watford centre-back Mike Williamson, Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim and Benfica midfielder Hassan Yebda.

Israel international Ben Haim agreed a four-year contract and his free transfer will be rubber-stamped once he has been given a work permit.

The 27-year-old joins a team who are bottom of the Premier League after four successive defeats but he is determined to help them climb out of the relegation zone.

"It is a big challenge because after four games we have no points but I am ready for the challenge," Ben Haim said.

Hart could pair Ben Haim with Williamson, who cost £3 million pounds from Championship club Watford and agreed a four-year contract.

"He's a young, hungry centre-half, a big lad who is uncompromising and does the basics first," Hart said of Williamson.

Hart also landed Yebda from Portuguese club Benfica. The 25-year-old French-born Algerian has moved to Fratton Park on a season-long loan.

Elsewhere, Stoke City signed defender Danny Collins from Sunderland for £2.75 million although the fee for the 29-year-old could rise to £3.5 million.

Hull boss Phil Brown increased his defensive options by landing Senegal centre-back Ibrahima Sonko, 28, on a season-long loan from Stoke.

Bolton bolstered their forward line by signing Croatia striker Ivan Klasnic, 29, on a one-year loan from French club Nantes.

Wanderers boss Gary Megson said: "His goalscoring record is very good and he has an excellent pedigree at international level with Croatia and domestically in Europe."

Birmingham signed Finland midfielder Teemu Tainio, 29, on loan from Sunderland for the rest of the season.

Burnley signed Portsmouth striker David Nugent on a six-month loan deal, subject to Premier League clearance, and teenage prodigy Joe McKee from Livingston.

While Fulham swooped for Swedish striker David Elm on a one-year deal.

Dunne - good signing for Villa, Citeh will miss him when it all goes pearshaped

  4. I notice Billy Davies has failed to sign a defender again. Does he think for one minute, that Forest are capable of winning every game 5-4? The defence is @#$% at the moment and Wes Morgan is little more than a conference player.

  10. 56. you pompey lot must be so niave, blaming 'mr redknapp' for you financial problems. try looking at the people who authorise the deals, i can tell you for nothing that it would not have been harry who signed or authorised payments, mainly as he would not have had the authority to do so. managers ask and propose deals they dont sanction them that is the board and the chairman. also didnt hear a single moan when you were doing better than you have done for years under him. As for buying succes, i think if you look closely into the details you will find Tottenham are one of the only clubs whose books balance and who are mostly self funded !!!!

  12. 56 - yeah, but you know what? That's the kind of bad luck that adds up to relegation form. Too much more of that, and you're piling the pressure on just to be able to catch up with everyone else. And you don't need that.

  13. It seems to me that a lot of correspondence on these pages revolves around which teams have the most money. This is the very sad thing about football these days, you can buy your success. It happened at Chelsea, it is happening at Man City and spurs. Poor old Pompey had to sell all their good players to pay the debts left behind by Mr Redknapp. We had our day in the sun at Wembley and finished 8th in the league. But we are paying for it now. I know most of our 'stars' have departed but I think we do have a team that can survive this season. Look at the results, a fluked goal against Fulham: 1 - 0, a penalty (that wasn't) against Birmingham: 1 - 0: a dead cert penalty against Arsenal that would have drawn us level and then who knows and a 1 - 0 defeat against Man City which donkey Nugent should have cancelled out at the end. I admit we were well beaten by Arsenal in the end, but we have played some good football overall. I will not give up hope, and I am sure we can turn things around. As to spurs' signing of Niko, well I could see that his heart wasn't in it any more playing for Pompey, and we don't want players like that. We will battle on and survive. I am sure there are three worse teams in the PL!

    PLAY UP POMPEY!!

  14. Harry 'car whealer dealer 'Redc**pp, ran to Spurs cos he liked the sound of CASH.. he decided Spurs' are a 'bigger' club. Then goes and buys half the Pompey players...every single day he's on Sky Sports news, giving it large thinks he's lord almighty...talk about 'in your face'!!.pity he has this show off mentality, used to like him, but now???Plaudits will come IF Spurs win something this season, and yes, Harry would get all the credit , no doubt, but hey, winning four games does not a season make...will they still be giving it after the Chelsea Spurs game......?

  15. I think good signing for Spurs Niko can cover every position in the midfield and lets face it he only been brought in for cover im also so happy we didnt get James, Cuddicini & Gomes are much better than him , good signing for Villa after the loss of Martin Laursen they needed sombody as good as him in the air and Dunne can do that, City are fecking idiots to let him go as an Irish man hes been good for us over the years cant see why City let him go he was in much better form than Toure and Lescott is over rated imo now if they sell Stephen Ireland to Spurs in January id be very happy man :P
