Champions League - European Power Rankings

Eurosport - Thu, 02 Oct 10:17:00 2008

Liverpool have stormed to the top of the fledgling Power Rankings but a hefty Spanish contingent are hot on the Reds' heels.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Champions League Liverpool Liverpool-PSV Kuyt - 0

We take into account both domestic and Champions League performances, plus the relative difficulty of each team's league, to find out who is the best team in Europe.

A Merseyside derby win, swiftly followed by a comfortable Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven, has seen Liverpool jump three places to claim top spot in our table of Europe's finest.

But it was not such a good week for Chelsea - at least on the European front - with the Blues slipping to seventh after their draw against minnows Cluj. Meanwhile Arsenal's fine display against Porto erased memories of their shock Premier League defeat to Hull City and sent them rising five places to eighth, level with Italian champions Internazionale.

This week's biggest climbers - to quote 'Prince of Pop' Paul Gambaccini - are the increasingly impressive Villarreal whose wins over Celtic and Sporting Gijon were enough to send them up from 15th to fifth, just behind fellow Spanish sides Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

A special mention for Anorthosis Famagusta now; the Cypriot side have broken into the top 10 for the first time after registering a maiden Champions League victory over Panathinaikos while maintaining their 100 per cent domestic record.

And finally, European champions Manchester United have made their inevitable return to the top 20, entering at 11 after wins over Bolton and AaB Aalborg.

1. (4) Liverpool - 26.67

2= (5) Atletico Madrid - 26.25

2= (6) Real Madrid - 26.25

4. (10) Barcelona - 23.75

5. (15) Villarreal - 22.50

6. (12) Anorthosis Famagusta - 22.00

7. (3) Chelsea - 21.67

8= (1) Internazionale - 20.00

8= (13) Arsenal - 20.00

10. (2) Juventus - 19.00

11. (-) Manchester United - 18.00

12. (18) Sporting - 17.63

13. (14) Lyon - 17.21

14. (8) Bayern Munich - 17.20

15. (9) CFR Cluj - 16.67

16. (7) Porto - 16.50

17. (16) Dynamo Kiev - 14.78

18. (-) Roma - 14.50

19. (19) Werder Bremen - 12.20

20. (20) Fiorentina - 12.00

HOW IT WORKS

Scores are based on points per game in domestic league and Champions League games.

Domestic points per game is multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.

League coefficients:

5 - England, Italy, Spain (12 teams)

4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Russia, Netherlands (10 teams)

4 - Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Romania, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine (10 teams)

Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5.

Example: Liverpool

14 points from 6 Premier League games = 2.33 points per game.

Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 2.33 x 5 = 11.67

Six points from two Champions League game = 3 points per game.

Multiplied by European coefficient of five - 15.00

Total score = 15.00 + 11.67 = 26.67

  12. liverpool! everytime u watch dis team plays, u c qualities in terms of techniques and tactics. if only they will beleive in themselves that they are truly a great side they may continue 2 underachieve particularly at home. for me liverpool is d most balanced side in dis season and rafa benitez may just equal or surpass sir alex treble. if and only if they are ready to confirm what we already suspect, a team with depth and necessary edge to overcome all opposition. try not 2 walk alone mighty liverpool.

  14. so you're saying that teams go to arsenal and tackle harder than they would anywhere else? haha thats complete b0llox.the reason its been made an issue is the fact that arsenal players are all continental,and they dont like tough tackeling teams.

  19. Watch out cos we have the beginings of the psychological strength we had in the days of dalglish souness rush etc etc,then we dominated on both fronts,sure its early days,but the feeling is there,we can actually do it again.if united could dominate for so long,why not us once more,we have a very balanced young squad eager to bring glory days back for the loyal supporters who make this club the best supported and loved around the world.Other supporters are maybe to proud to admit it,but secretly everyone is a liverpool supporter.
