Premier League - Ten weeks out for Scholes

Eurosport - Thu, 02 Oct 14:08:00 2008

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes will miss 10 weeks after a scan revealed medial ligament damage in his left knee.

2008-2009 Champions League Paul Scholes - 0

Scholes was carried off after 16 minutes of Tuesday's Champions League match away to Aalborg following a tackle by Thomas Augustinussen.

The 33-year-old is expected to sit out up to 15 matches and he could struggle to play again in 2008.

It is a major blow for United's already depleted midfield. Michael Carrick faces another month on the sidelines with a broken foot, while Owen Hargreaves has struggled to shake off knee tendinitis.

Darren Fletcher is expected to stand in as a holding midfielder, while the versatile John O'Shea is another option.

Striker Wayne Rooney, who scored the opening goal in the 3-0 win but picked up an ankle injury, is doubtful for Saturday's match against Blackburn.

However he will be fit for England's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Young Brazilian right-back Rafael Da Silva also came off injured, although his absence will not be missed as Gary Neville and Wes Brown are available to face Blackburn.

  7. He's not the cleanest defender, but the man has still managed to make the deepest of marks on the game due to his vision, tenacity, and shamefully adored blue-collar attitude. Temper? Perhaps, but it's that same temerity which saw Scholes riding the Three Lions and discarding them at the juncture of what on May 23rd became a rock solid decision.

I can only wonder if his return will evince that product which ever seems the norm in the decorated winter of his legend.

Speedy recovery to you Scholes, and may you epitomize it with the likes of last year's wonder strike against a team whose celebrated talent you impetuously displaced with not so much as an afterthought. Scholes sent Messi and Ronaldinho home, and United - everyone else after that. DO YOU ALL REMEMBER THAT STRIKE AND ITS ULTIMATE CONTRIBUTION??? Scholes is a boss and you all know it.

  12. Probably the most genuine, gifted and most unasumed player for years Paul Scholes. Can you imagine an England team full of players with his attitude and agression.

  13. absolute nonsense - Gerrard has been MOM in most England matches often out of position. Suddenly Lampard has a good game without gerrard there and everyone claims that gerrard is not good enough.

  17. Gerrard and Scholes are the best central midfielders in the world, I never understood why they never played together. Both great in the tackle, fiersome shot, fantastic at moving forward and they both have tons of confidence and compusure. Don't get me wrong Lampards a great player, but he's not an all rounder like Gerrard or Scholes, when was the last time you saw Lamps running back to make a last ditch sliding tackle?

From clivewilliamson, on Wed 1 Oct 7:23PM
  18. Don't talk to me about Gerrard and Lampard; Scholes has been the best midfielder this country has produced in a generation. England have suffered badly since his decision to retire from international football - just look at the stats if you don't believe me. And i am absolutely 100%, NOT a manchester united fan; but i do know class when i see it and Scholes just oozes class! Furthermore he is a professional par excellence; no diving, no whining - yes his tackling is a bit naive (not cynical), but he is always quick to hold up his hands and take his cards on the chin - take note messrs Terry & Cahill!

  20. yawn yawn yawn all the critictics and gooooners and scallies are out inforce tonite so scholes is injured what you seem to forget all the england managers past and present have tried to tempt him out of retirement to bring balance and stabilty to our mid field where gerard and lampard have failed and you ask any one who knows about fooball and they will tell you the same england became @#$% when he retired and he could a way better job than beckham ever could do now
