Championship - Barton faces months out

Eurosport - Fri, 02 Oct 10:06:00 2009

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton could be sidelined for several months after undergoing surgery on a foot injury.

Newcastle United's Joey Barton (right) and Cardiff City's Jay Bothroyd battle for the ball - 0

Barton had exploratory surgery on his right foot on Thursday and the Magpies are now awaiting full details of the extent of the damage.

However, the club are confident the problem is not connected to Barton's previous foot problems - he has suffered two metatarsal injuries in the past.

Argentina defender Fabricio Coloccini will also sit out the Championship leaders' clash with Bristol City at St James' Park with a groin problem, but Ryan Taylor could return from a calf strain.

Striker Shola Ameobi remains on the sidelines with a foot injury and is expected to be out of action for up to two months.

  2. NEWCASTLE WILL HAVE TO PLAY WELL BECAUSE BRISTOL CITY WONT GO DOWN WITHOUT A HELL OF A FIGHT AWAY THE LADS

  3. The fact that Barton is allowed to walk (well, hobble for a while) the streets is bad enough. That a so-called professional football club pay him thousands a week to drag their name through the mud is a sad reflection on a once mighty club. Every week brings fresh embarrassment (see Keegan's claims about being told to sign a player from clips on youtube for instance). Genuine fans do not deserve this treatment and should stage a genuine protest against the likes of Barton instead of blindly supporting him because he occasionally plays for their team. The Newcastle board have been disgraceful for years. They have turned NUFC into a national joke - dark times indeed for the black n' whites!

  6. How can you say Cantonas attack was like gerrards eight handed mob assault on one man . As for Barton he represents the new breed of football hard men a total joke like that welsh hunchback at wastelands.

  7. Its a travesty, joey not being able to use his naturaly sublime god given talent for a few months. But on the brightside if joey cant kick lumps, spit and punch people on the football pitch, then maybe he could moonlight as a newcastle bouncer for a few months and indulge his favourite hobby of fighting with the local hairy knuckle dragging, toothless crack addled clientel of the good parish of necastle upon tyne.(and thats just their birds).

  11. barton has done his time. not like some who get off like steve g or mr cantona at palace. but lets give barton the chance to turn it around and show that he can play football. people say ever person deserves a second chance so lets be fair and give him it. as its his last one when he is fit again. newcastle 2 - 0 carol, harewood.

  19. Barton won't be missed, not after the shockers he put in this season!
No disrespect to Bristol City, but anything less than 3 points here will be failure.
Jonas must start instead of Butt, and Harewood too; keep Ranger for the last 20 minutes where his pace can do real damage against tired defences!
