Crewe have sacked manager Gudjon Thordarson and replaced him with club legend and technical director Dario Gradi.

The Railwaymen were expected to push for an immediate return to League One following their relegation last term, but have won just four of their opening 10 league matches.

Thordarson's (pictured) exit follows a board meeting on Thursday night. Gradi will remain in charge of the first team until further notice.

Crewe chairman John Bowler told The Sentinel: "The board of directors met and decided that it would be in the best interests of the club that we parted company with Gudjon as manager.

"We are not looking for a replacement at this stage, the prime objective is to get the club back on course and get us back into winning ways.

"It's an important season for us. We want to get promoted back to League One as quickly as possible and the recent series of results haven't been good enough."
