Eleven times grand slam winner Serena Williams has set a single-season prize money record on the women's tour by earning $6,545,586 (3,992,672 pounds) in 2009, the Women's Tennis Association said on Monday.
Williams, 28, now has career earnings of nearly $30 million.

Well now that's just crazy talk Vlado - surely 2 grand slams and the yec in 2009 is better than 2 grand slams the yec and 7 other titles in 2007!

This does prove that Serena was the best player on the WTA Tour this year, but this was not her best season to date... We cannot really compare the prize money she earned in 2002 (when she played her best tennis, but earned less) and what she earned this year... Prize money increased drastically over the last few years... I still have to admit that even though Serena broke Henin's season prize money record, Justine's 2007 season was way better then Serena's 2009...

Ok so no's 8, 9 and 10 or just 8 if you're not a post duplicating idiot - Dinara Safina earned more this season than Serena did the year she won 3 slams in 2002 so I guess that makes her season better than Serenas best ever season in terms of tournament victories. Recent enough for you?

Felix learn to read. This has nothing got to do with hatred or like for Serena Williams this has got everything to do with the word "Record" being used for what Serena achieved this season - you're not compairing like with like because it has EVERYTHING to do with INFLATION and NOTHING to do with ACHIEVEMENT. The likelyhood is Clijsters will break this "record" next season and it'll still mean nothing because it is pointless.
@mohawk you can call it whatever you like,the simple fact is that the figures speak for her,she doesnt dominate but won 2 of the 4 majors including the seson endings,leave hatred and enjoy tennis,you are not forced to luv her tennis but mind you you can still continue to watch the playback of the graff etc,the world move on, everybody has there time and this is hers,you can talk or hate her from today till tomorow,the fact still remain that shes still the best TODAY....................WILLIAMSES 4EVER
It's a completely irrelevent record because prize money is going up all the time and that's the only reason she has that record. She didn't even remotely dominate this season and ends up with the record - Graf and Navratilova had seasons where they almost went unbeaten only losing 1 or 2 matches and Serena herself has had WAAAAY better seasons so as records go this is a pretty stupid 1.
