Stockley, who made 35 appearances for Vale since arriving from Wycombe in 2008 and who played against Dagenham on Saturday, underwent surgery after suffering from double vision but has failed to overcome the problem.

He told the club's official website: "This has undoubtedly been the most difficult decision in my career and it's not one I have taken lightly.

"I have had 16 years in professional football and have some fantastic memories, but it's important that I put my health and family first.

"My eyesight is something which has been troubling me and unfortunately, I've had to make the decision not to continue playing."

Manager Micky Adams added: "The decision to retire is never and easy one but it was evident that Sam had been struggling with his eyesight and in that situation, you have to put your health first."

  1. Good luck Sam. It's never nice to hear about anyone suffering from such a problem at a young age, and I hope you make a full recovery.
