Premier League - Paper Round: Capello on the Hunt

Eurosport - Mon, 02 Nov 08:43:00 2009

England are a side transformed under Fabio Capello but the Italian is not resting on his laurels. Just a day after banning the World Cup song, the Mail claims he has set his sights on recruiting a player from under Germany's noses.

FOOTBALL England manager Fabio Capello - 0

Aaron Hunt has been in superb form for Werder Bremen and has played for the country of his birth through all youth levels. However, he has an English mother and Capello is planning to lure him.

*Prediction: Hunt to get a Germany call-up and we can discard this page of the Mail.

It just seems to be getting worse for Rafa Benitez. Just a couple of days after the defeat at Fulham, Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan has put the boot in by saying the Spaniard's days at Anfield are numbered.

"It's all gone wrong with the manager," The Sun quote Whelan as saying. "He's shown where his priorities lie. He wants to win the European Cup because he wants to get a job in Europe. For me his days at Anfield have got to be numbered."

So if Benitez does go, who should replace him? Steve Howard in The Sun is looking to win the populist vote by tipping Kenny Dalglish, the last man to lead Liverpool to title glory.

The papers have got everyone running around in circles over Phil Brown's future. We've had 'two games to save his job', 'one game to save his job', 'It's all over after defeat to Burnley'. Well today the Daily Mail is suggesting Brown has been given a stay of execution following emergency talks with Hull's top brass.

We get the impression that the tabloids don't really know what is going on inside the KC.

We're reticent to put the boot into someone when they're being so honest, but Alan Smith picks up Monday's stating the obvious award. "I know that I'm not as good as I was," the Newcastle man told The Sun. "I don't play as freely but I am lucky to still be playing."

Steve McClaren is rebuilding his reputation in the Netherlands with Twente and he has spoken to The Sun about life in the land of the clog.

"At the moment everything is going well and I'm enjoying myself again," he said. "The people here have been very good to me.

"But I know the fickleness of football. If we lose two or three, those fans will want to send me on a ship back to England." If you do come back, Steve, just leave that brolly in Enschede.

The Mirror's Football Spy column has been working overtime. 'Exclusive 1' states Darren Ferguson is facing the sack and 'Exclusive 2' says Valencia's David Villa is favouring a move to Manchester United ahead of Chelsea.

  3. No manager can improve liverpool with current owners and players. fact. lack of proper replacements for torres and steve g whilst they were, are injured is the key to this team. + lucas has to be left out when livepool is playing lesser teams. no one manager can better rafa at liverpool. league is as good as over for liverpool, CL success does not look even remotely likely, so FA cup is the only trophy we can realisticcaly hope for. liverpool needs affirmative amount of cold cash to invest towards 2,3 players worth 65-75 million. thats reallity of it. no magic wand, just cold cash for a winger, forward, center half and midfield maestro. you all know this, and as soon as you accept it, it will feel better. Oh yeah, Ronnie Whelan... shut up.

b4 he will kill our football the board should send him away, you can see man.united with the way they are playing that is not encouraging the coach is still tryn is best to remain in the best 4 of the epl and cl,they still want villa and silva to gear up the team.

From Nigel, on Mon 2 Nov 12:04PM
  6. 'the fickleness of football' does that refer to the Liverpool fans crowing about beating United one week and proclaiming that Rafa is fit to walk on water, then exclaiming that he must be fired after yet another defeat and a pi$$-poor performance? I'm afraid the Liddypool supporters are the most fickle on the planet!

  9. In a season where united are not exactly setting the game on fire, chelsea and arsenal finding a good vein of form and everything to play for ,it amazes that the scousers are still happy to let the fat waiter steer them towards yet another silverless season....by the time sir alex sorts his squad to retain the title the scouse will be bottom half of the table, out of europe, the carling and the FA cup....and facing a huge crisis with a crumbling stadium, bickering owners and a one trick pony that is off its food.....happy days!GGMU!
