Bassong: Top four still possible

Mon, 02 Nov 15:49:09 2009

Defender Sebastien Bassong still believes Tottenham can break into the top four this campaign despite their 3-0 defeat at rivals Arsenal on Saturday.

Spurs have kept just one clean sheet in the Barclays Premier League all season and dropped to fifth in the table after Saturday's setback.

Tottenham's defensive woes worsened when Bassong limped off with a hamstring strain and is now expected to be sidelined for five weeks.

But he still believes there is enough quality in Harry Redknapp`s squad to challenge for a place in the top four.

"We have big quality in the squad and if we improve and work hard we can take a top four position," said Bassong.

"We need to keep working and work every day because that game on Saturday showed you can never stop at that level. If you don't work, you are going to be disappointed again and again. To be in the top four, we need more."

  1. WilsonJet, the fact that three players missing is such a huge loss illustrates the weakness in the argument that Tottenham have a strong squad. As it happens, Arsenal's reasults when Fabregas was out injured last season were actually better than when he was in the team, and van Persie has lost much of the last two seasons to injury....

  4. Mid-table talk for Tottenham is more nonsense than the possibility of top four finish. Realistically, I have always felt that this current Spurs team is destined for a 6th place finish. They will compete in Europe next year, but not in the Champions League.

On the other hand, what would Arsenal be without Fabregas and Van Persie?! Don't discredit the impact a few key players can have. The absence of Lennon, Defoe, & Modric for Spurs is HUGE!

  5. Harry, dream on, top four, more like mid table again. The players dont believe it,
Harry certainly does not, no steel in this team, get rid of the comfort zone boys and replace with men that really want to play top football.

  6. hahaha spurs fans & players r jst bunch of dreamers! y? gunners were missing several key players bt spurs were only missing modric, defoe & lennon who even if dey played da match wouldn't have had any effect on da match! can defoe beat gallas or veramelon 2 score or leenon 2 run with clichy? sumtin crouch didn't do with his height despite all da crosses? c'mon spurs, stop dreaming! ur 1st eleven can nvr beat gunners 1st eleven! it's a fact u gotta addmit!

  8. No.6: One could name players such as Rosicky, Walcott or Denilson, but maybe they do not stand out as star players to the same degree as Modric, Lennon and Defoe because the overall standard of Arsenal's squad is higher? Surely to be considered as one of the top four teams you have to have a squad that can cope with the loss of three players.

  9. #3 you think Arse were missing key players? Who? Arse shaven, Van pussie, Fibreglass, Ed-dive-o, Almuniarse and CLeeshit all played. We were missing Lennon, Modric, Defoe.

  10. Sorry, helenhotspur, but I think you're being pretty optimistic. I can't think that you believe Liverpool's current bad run will last all season, or that Man City will scrape draws for the rest of the campaign. Personally, I would have Spurs down as candidates for 7-8th place with Everton. Time, however, will tell...

  13. Spurs are well in contention for the top 4,with the way liverpool are playing they are gifting us a top 4 space, man city are just after getting a string of draws thanks to given and of course we were missin LENNON, DEFOE & MODRIC for the north london derby!! Spurs couldnt expect to win that with Bentley, Bale and Pavylechenko on instead of them!

  14. Can someone explain to me the basis for this somewhat consistent Spurs claim to be capable of a top four finish? Its quite baffling given the evidence on the pitch. Is it trying to use the old idea that if you say something loud enough for long enough people will believe you?
