Torquay boss Paul Buckle believes his side can use their 1-0 win over in-form Northampton as a stepping stone in their bid to climb the table.
The Gulls, who host Cheltenham in the FA Cup on Saturday, have strung together a six-match unbeaten league run, with five consecutive draws before their win over Northampton.
Buckle said: "We have taken our time to find our feet results-wise but certainly not performance-wise, we certainly don't deserve to be where we are in the table.
"This season is a test. I have not been used to drawing and losing games for two years and nor have these players so it has been a test of character for all of us. But that is when you see what people are made of and, like I have said before, I don't feel my encouragement towards the players has changed.
"I want them to be positive, I want them to go and get after teams because I know they are capable. We have remained positive and credit to the players for that."
