Wenger sets target for Van Persie

Mon, 02 Nov 14:31:31 2009

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists there is no reason why Robin van Persie cannot go on to score 25 goals this season.

The Dutchman topped Arsenal's scoring charts with 20 last term and has already netted eight times this campaign.

"If you look at the chances he has had since the start of the season you cannot say he won't reach 25 goals," said Wenger.

"Robin has taken much more responsibility because he is up front. He has committed himself to the club for a long period and he is at an age, 26, where a footballer becomes really efficient, mature and wants to win things.

"That is why I believe he can be the best passer in the league and the best goalscorer in the league. When you look at the goals he scores they are always impressive."

  2. RVP is a pure class, I think he will score more than 25 goals depending on how healthy he will be for all the season. I wish him a good luck.

  4. i think van the man has the highest soccer IQ in the EPL, his timing is perfect and also has first touches that drogoba dreams about.Arsenal all the way!!!

  5. The way the Gunners play these days, I don't think any one player will rack up double digit goals far ahead of the others. RVP is a class act though, I think he'd be a big part of our success this season

  7. The Gooners must restore some faith with Le Prof. Looking back at the good invicible days, it only takes time before a new invicibles in the making will emerge. I agree that RVP is not as good as Titi. But RVP is better than Henry in his class. He is a wonderful FK taker. His left foot was superb. 25 goals a season wouldn't be a problem for him. Looking at his form right now, RVP may be vital in Arsenal title dreams.

  8. We already have the best passer in the league in Cesc. I think Arshavin can/will be a close second as well. RvP creates good channels for others to fill when he moves out wide and he makes good passes as well but let's leave him to finish off moves the team creates for him.

  9. The Boss had to move Henry and remove the big head he had. Henry is mr.arsenal, but his time was up. there are no big heads in the dressing room anymore. ade was starting to think big of himself, and the boss shipped him out.

Comment 2-shoo, high at the time? so you think we got value? that's what Bank of America thought when it bought Merrill Lynch by having the same perspective you have... value?HAHAHA.... Yes it was three years ago, but we ain't got closer to winning anything in the 3 years after we sold Henry. Henry was playing his best when he was 30 and still was for the past two years at Barcelona.

Arsene was good but his judgment of players recently really shocks me.... Bendtner and Diaby? C'mon??? We still need to buy more players in January. I don't think the club or fans will fire Wenger if he spends money to buy a few more quality players and causes the Club to breakeven.... But if it is another year of empty trophy shelves, he's got to admit his young squad have taken 5 years too long and change tact.

  13. Always standing up for his team. Unlike most managers, Wenger sees himself as part of the Arsenal team. Fantastic defense of Van-Persie, couldn't have put it better myself i.e to support my team-mate.

  14. lawmichelle, wtf is your point? Nothing like wallowing in news from 3+ years ago! Henry was leaving whether you liked it or not, and the amount he brought to Arsenal in the transfer was high at that time. Have some perspective.

Still can't believe Wenger sold off Henry and thought Bendtner or Da Silva could even be half of the talisman. Van Persie is still no Henry either. Maybe a year or two to go before Van Persie proves he has really taken over the reigns. Henry brought us to the Final of the Champions League of 2006 by himself and we sold him at the same price as we sold Adebayor to Manchester City for....25million which is also the same amount we got for selling Toure.....Henry was sold off dirt cheap in his prime.
