Wenger talks up title bid

Mon, 02 Nov 10:10:00 2009

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger talked up his team's Barclays Premier League title chances after brushing aside Tottenham 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium and denting their rivals' hopes of sustaining a top-four challenge.

Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas struck just before the break within a minute of each other and van Persie added the third in the second half, with Wenger's men unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions and establishing their title challenge.

"Do we have enough? I say yes," the Frenchman said. "I've said that since the first day of the season and it won't change now. We want to show consistency and intelligence and that is not easy. I believe we have the opportunity and it will be down to our attitude."

Robbie Keane suggested earlier in the week that Spurs' squad had a greater strength in depth, although the defeat puts a question mark over whether they will compete with the traditional heavyweights.

"We have to see over a longer period," Wenger said. "I am positive for us because we have the minimum points with the performances we have produced. Will Tottenham be up there? I don't know. It's too early.

"It is not about opinion, it is about performance on the pitch. That is what is important."

Van Persie's 42nd-minute opener crept in at the near post from Bacary Sagna's cross, then Wilson Palacios lost the ball from the kick-off and Fabregas brushed past the Honduras international and Tom Huddlestone before skipping around Ledley King and finishing.

Van Persie said: "They played with the right attitude and a good spirit, it was tight and tough to start with but they died after our first goal."

Wenger also saw the period before half-time as crucial.

"We took advantage of the shock of the first goal and in the second half we always played a little restricted," he said. "After the third there wasn't the impression that Spurs would come back."

  1. Spurs are rubbish, face facts. A team of Grannies would have given us more of a challenge. Dissillusioned Manager, worthless team and owners who couldn't give a @#$% that sums up spurs.COYS. Yeah right what a bunch of jokers

  4. Oh, what a classy reposte Wayne (comment 10). How did you ever think to call Wenger a paedo? Brilliant... brilliant, I tell ya! You should be on Have I Got News for You with wit like that! (Detect a note of sarcasm yet?)
Oh and Lee (comment 2) - I doubt that ALL Arsenal fans were running around singing 3-0. Maybe just a few. I am sure that if Spurs had won 3-0 that the same amount of their fans would have been doing the same, so save the sanctimonious cr*p for someone who cares.

  7. Arsenal are on the path to glory but needed to be more consistent in their approach to certain games. They need to strike a double to be on top and it would be finished. The 2-points adrift from their penultimate game cost them a second place as it were but that could be remedied in this weekend's clash between Chelsea and Man. Utd, only if Arsenal will put their acts together against Wolves.

  8. @ Alan, you are one of the rare United well-mannered fans. Good on you for that.
I must say that United seem to be struggling without the skill of Ronaldo and the work-rate of Tevez but I do think you guys are doing quite well even when performing below par.
I hope Arsenal can continue this momentum and win something come the end of the season.. If Players like Fabregas and RvP stay fit, I see us going all the way.
    UP THE GUNNERS!!!

  10. FROM A MU FANATIC: Feel another title is beyond our team this year, missing Ronaldo far more than people relaized.
Should MU fail. love to see Arsenal win the title, class team, great to watch, young players yes, but some fantastic talent on board.
Arsene Wenger may well be proved right this season, EPL and Champions league, tall order, but coud be within their grasp.

  12. Arsenal really have a fantastic squad and definately can fight for the title but look at the injured players now. They have 9 out. Its true 4 of them will be back for the next game - Traore , Rosicky , Wilshere and Vela but still there are way too many injured . If they manage to keep walcott , rosicky , nasri and denilson fit for most of the season , they will be able to keep diaby on the bench and the team will be perfect especially attackingly ! Diaby can do much better than what he is showing in the last 3 games but i dont know whats happening with him. He can be world class but defensively he is really poor and he is not in form. Also , Ramsey, Gibbs , Merida and Wilshere are future stars and they need to play more this season.

I was in Finsbury Park yesterday evening. All Arsenal fans running around singing 3-0 etc... How effin childish and pathetic that your whole lives revolve around football fighting and being a C*** to your wife.
