Bolton manager Gary Megson insisted there has been no approach from Chelsea for Nicolas Anelka after seeing his team win 1-0 at home to Derby.French newspaper L'Equipe attributed quotes to the 11-goal striker on Wednesday, in which it was claimed dialogue between the two clubs had begun with the opening of the January transfer window.
Megson, speaking after the late Premier League win over the Rams at the Reebok Stadium, said: "In terms of Chelsea making contact, I am not aware of that, or any other club making contact.
"I am aware of the speculation and have seen the article. But Nic did say if nothing happens he is happy at Bolton.
"It is something and nothing. We will just keep going and try to deal with the speculation that surrounds him."
Megson was delighted the way Anelka applied himself, even though he failed to add to his tally against the Rams.
It was left to substitute Stelios Giannakopoulos to snatch a stoppage-time winner to stun the league's bottom club.
"I was really pleased with Nic. He has not scored but he worked really hard for us," added Megson.
"With five minutes to go, he was chasing a ball that he lost himself.
"We have played badly but got away with it. Stelios has a knack of getting a goal.
"I thought a lot of the players looked as though they had played four games in a short space of time. At times we were running on empty and looked tired."
Derby wilted after a bright start with Craig Fagan twice being denied by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Then substitute Michael Johnson saw his effort from the edge of the area come back off the crossbar.
However, just when they looked like securing only their eighth point of the season, the visitors failed to deal with a long ball from Jaaskelainen.
Giannakopoulos latched on and chipped the ball over advancing keeper Lewis Price then headed into a empty net.
Rams manager Paul Jewell was left in a state of disbelief.
"You are not down the bottom of the league because you are unlucky," he said.
"I have been here for seven games and in five of them we have conceded late goals. The fear factor comes into play.
"It was a horrible game but we looked as though we might hold on for a point.
"I was pleased with a lot of things but it came down to our defending as a team. We have conceded goals like that all season."
Defender Jay McEveley could be sidelined for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in a challenge by Kevin Davies.
"It was a bad tackle on one of our main players," added Jewell, who has taken former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert on trial.
"He's coming in on Friday and we'll see how he looks," the former Wigan boss told Sky Sports News.
"We'll have a look and see what condition he is in and we'll see if he is right for us."
