Champions League - Jose: Vidic should miss tie

Eurosport - Sat, 03 Jan 19:45:00 2009

Internazionale coach Jose Mourinho has said Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic should be banned for both legs of the Champions League last-16 tie between the two sides.

FOOTBALL Premier League 2007-08 Manchester United Nemanja Vidic - 0

Vidic was sent off in December's FIFA Club World Cup final against LDU Quito, which United won 1-0, after appearing to swing an elbow at opposition striker Claudio Bieler.

The Serbian centre-back does not yet know how many matches he will miss as a result, with UEFA still to decide on the length of any punishment.

Vidic will almost certainly miss the world champions' trip to the San Siro for the first leg of the Champions League tie on February 24, but Mourinho believes that would not be punishment enough.

The former Chelsea boss told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "I'd be surprised if Vidic didn't get at least two matches - which wouldn't even be much for a gesture like that, during a match seen by the whole world."

Mourinho, who will lock horns with Sir Alex Ferguson five years on from knocking United out of the Champions League at the same stage when coach of Porto, added that he felt Wayne Rooney had been fortunate to avoid a ban for an incident in the group stages.

Rooney appeared to stand on the chest of Aalborg's Kasper Risgard during the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on December 10 but avoided punishment after the incident was reviewed by UEFA.

"I don't like the fact that in football there are different standards. I was amazed that Rooney was not suspended," Mourinho said.

  6. It should be at least three games - if not five. The Italian defender got five match-bans for such an offense, didn't he? Surely, Inter vs ManU will be an awesome tie, as well as Liverpool vs Real and Chelsea vs Juventus. Tough games for the English sides, other teams have it easier... may the best win - Barca vs Liverpool for the final?

  9. How about debating this: In the premier league or indeed any other league competitions, we change the point system. 4 points for an away win, 3 points for home win, 2 points for away draw and 1 point for home draw. And of course 0 for any loss. This will discourage teams from playing for draws be it at home or away.

  11. How can he say that about Rooney, if he's watched the footage he would see that Rooney didn't even stand on Risgard's chest. He merely went to step over him and stood on him it was clearly accidental.
Vidic however did deserve the red card, there is no doubt in my mind about that, but who is Mourinho to comment on how many matches he should miss.

  12. jose should be ashamed of him self, he should have just said he dosn't want vidic to play because he is a threat to him.

  14. Ban Vidic if you will. We'll knock that moron out with Evans playing instead. Nice to hear Maureen off again. It gives the Chelski fans reason to feel all nostalgic.

  15. is jose running scared? why doesn't he just ask eufa to ban the entire first team and fergie and the kit man, they might just have a chance then. only one famous team in milan and jose isnt there.

  16. @carminegatto, an inter fan you might be a fan of football u aern't jose should learn to shut up the season he won the champions league was marred with controvesy he is yet to achieve a fifth of fergies achievements all that noise he is making is a sign of fear
truth be told he should be banned (correct spelling) from those games for instigating animosity like any player who shops for a card for an opponent

  17. please have any of u watched the cartoon SHARK TALE.there is no difference between the main character OSCAR and mourinho.in the cartoon, oscar boasted of killing a shark when in reality he is too small to even satisfy a shark in a meal.mourinho has always been a talkative, yes he tried with porto but the champions league he won with porto was just luck because man u deafetd them at old traford only that the animal who calls himself a referee in that match ruled a clean goal scored by scholes as an off side before they managed to eqaulize in the end through bennie mccarthy.i beleive that feat was what got him the job of chelsea and with the kind of money he has with chelsea, any sane coach would have gotten the champions league but he could not and ferguson being the tactician, through him out of chelsea which mourinho never beleived any one could detrone him from the premier league again.i know this match will be interesting, all i want is for mourinho to come out and attack like a reasonable team and not pack the midfield like he always do at chelsea which nearly ruined the beautiful english league.
since he claimed that ibramovich is the best, let him use him to defeat man u and i am sure ronaldo will sink the truth inside him when the time comes.
    EDU BRAZIL.

  18. Vidic definantly deserved the red card. He threw the elbow. nuff said, and this is from a united fan. As for Jose? of course he's going to do his best to get vidic out for both games as well as draw any attention onto Uniteds tactics....just like any other coach would do for their teams. ALL FORWARDS will drop like a stone if given the chance. Good honest fair play is few and far between nowadays unfortantly

From Dale, on Sun 4 Jan 7:23AM
  19. The remarks by Jose Mourinho is uncalled for. It is nothing short of a player demanding the referee to show a card to an opposing player - which is now dealt with with a yellow card. Let UEFA deal with it.
