Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson expects a decision on Benjani Mwaruwari's future to be made early this week.
The Portsmouth striker failed to complete his proposed switch to Eastlands befre Thursday night's transfer deadline due to problems with the paperwork but the Premier League may yet agree to sanction the deal.
The Swedish manager said: "I expect a decision to be made either on Monday or Tuesday.
"We have to wait until then to see all the facts of the situation.
"I want him to come and I believe he wants to join us."
Benjani has also indicated that City is his preferred choice.
"I'm still hopeful that the move will go through," he told the Manchester Evening News. "I want to play for Manchester City."
Eriksson admits he is concerned about City's plight following their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday - their first at home in the Premier League under him.
He said: "Arsenal are a very good team but we knew that before the game.
"It was disappointing to lose at home for the first time this season.
"For us it is time to wake up if we want to play in Europe this season. It is far away at the moment.
"We are all angry. We need to start the game in another way than we have done recently."
