All cars running in the 2009 World Touring Car Championship will be partly powered by environmentally-friendly fuel.
Both petrol and diesel-powered cars will use partially-green fuels supplied by Italian petrochemical firm Panta.
The diesel contains 10 per cent bio-diesel produced from rape seed oil, while the petrol contains 10 per cent bio-ethanol derived from the waste created during industrial sugar production.
The bio-ethanol in particular is highly environmentally-friendly. Earlier bio-ethanol fuels were derived from food crops such as sugar and animal fat. By using industrial waste the latest bio-ethanol reduces the use of fossil fuels without interfering with food production.
The use of greener fuels is not the only environmentally-sensitive aspect of the WTCC regulations for 2009: the FIA have also imposed limitations on the cars to limit noise levels and air pollution.
