Liedson curbing his ambition

Thu 03 Apr, 08:15 AM

Sporting striker Liedson insists scoring an away goal is not the be all and end all for their UEFA Cup last eight tie against Rangers at Ibrox.Rangers have progressed to the last eight after twice keeping clean sheets in the first leg at home to Panathinaikos and Werder Bremen.

While Walter Smith's men have built their success on solid foundations, Sporting rely heavily on Liedson and strike partner Simon Vukcevic.

The Brazilian netted two away goals during a 5-0 aggregate win over Basel and the Portuguese side have only failed to score on the road once, at Old Trafford, during their Champions League and UEFA Cup campaign.

But Liedson does not believe his side should get carried away with looking for another away goal as that could leave them susceptible against the Gers in tonight's first leg.

"We have to try to score but it's not only about that," the 30-year-old said. "It's about playing a good game, although scoring away from home would help.

"Confidence is high but we have to concentrate on our game, Rangers are a good quality team. They have knocked out some very good teams like Werder Bremen."

While Smith has built Rangers' revival at home and abroad around a solid defence, he has hinted he may tweak his tactics to give Sporting problems.

And his opposite number, former Portugal midfielder Paulo Bento, expects Rangers to be more attacking than the Bolton outfit they encountered in the previous round.

"Rangers are a defensive team but they will not play the whole time like Bolton played," said Bento, who hopes Brazilian defender Ronny will recover from injury.

"They are a better team, they will attack more, they play a bit more open. But if they play the same type of way as Bolton then we will be prepared, as we showed. We improved over the two matches."

Sporting have had an indifferent domestic campaign, sitting fifth in the league, 20 points behind leaders Porto.

But Liedson insists winning the UEFA Cup is a realistic ambition.

"Every match we play and every competition we enter we try to win," the former Corinthians player said. "The UEFA Cup is well known all over the world so it's very important for us."

Liedson, who has topped the Portuguese scoring charts in two of the last three seasons, has recently been linked with a move to Spain.

But he seemed focused on helping Sporting when quizzed on his future during an Ibrox press conference.

"I was very flattered by Sevilla's interest but I am at a great club and I have a contract until 2010," he said. "I am very happy here."
