Gallas Gives Rallying Call

Thu 03 Apr, 04:09 PM

Arsenal captain William Gallas insisted his young side are ready for the "big fight" as their season enters a crucial phase.

The Gunners face Liverpool for the second time this week at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with their Champions League quarter-final tie evenly balanced at 1-1 following Wednesday night's first leg.

Emmanuel Adebayor headed Arsenal into the lead, only for Dirk Kuyt to quickly cancel that advantage out with a swift equaliser from close range.

Manager Arsene Wenger was left incensed after what he claimed was a "blatant penalty" when the Dutch striker later tugged back winger Alexander Hleb as the Gunners were left frustrated following their second-half dominance.

Now attentions will turn to first securing the victory needed at lunchtime on Saturday to keep Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League title race before then getting another positive result on Merseyside next Tuesday night.

Gunners skipper Gallas is in no doubt his men are up for the challenge.

"We were not lucky in the second half, but now in the second leg at Liverpool, we can do something," declared the experienced French centre-half.

"We know it will be difficult. They will have their supporters behind them.

"It is a good opportunity to play at Anfield when you play for something big.

"We have to be strong, enjoy it and play our football. All the boys are ready for the big fight.

"We do not want to give up until the end."

The Arsenal captain added: "We have been good during all the season, but, it's true, if we win there that would be very decent because it is a quarter-final of the Champions League and to go to a semi-final it would be better than last season. It would be great."

Gallas believes Arsenal can take heart from the performance they produced to knock holders AC Milan out in the San Siro last month.

However, the former Chelsea defender knows Liverpool will know just what to expect.

"It will be different because Milan do not have the same style of football as Liverpool," he said.

"We played them at a very high tempo, very quick, but against Liverpool it will be difficult because they play a game like this every weekend. They will be ready."

Arsenal introduced England squad man Theo Walcott at half-time, when he replaced Robin van Persie who has withdrawn as a precaution because of a muscular problem in his thigh.

The 19-year-old - recently back in the international frame under Fabio Capello - looked lively down the flanks.

Walcott believes Arsenal can respond at Anfield. He said: "People can say that Liverpool are favourites, that is a good thing really as we can just concentrate on ourselves and they can have all the pressure.

"There is plenty of belief, the lads have been buzzing in training.

"We will take the positives out of this game, look at Liverpool's negatives and see where it takes us.

"I think we will go there, play our football and get a goal."

"We will turn to Saturday now and then back to the Champions League.

Gallas, meanwhile, has found himself coming in for criticism following his reaction to the last-gasp draw at Birmingham on February 23 when he broke down in the centre-circle, as well as a controversial magazine article commenting on Walcott's development.

Manager Wenger, though, maintains the 30-year-old is the right man to lead his young Gunners forward.

Gallas said: "I try to do my best for the team, for the club, and I am happy because the manager supports me.

"Now I have to give everything until the end, so the season is not finished yet. We will see at the end."

Gallas added: "I will be happy at the end of the season if we win something. That is my job.

"We know it will be maybe more difficult in the Premier League, we have to win every game and that will not be easy."
