Liverpool earned themselves an away goal to take back to Anfield for the second leg against Arsenal, but the scorer of that goal Dirk Kuyt was lucky not to concede a penalty for his challenge on Alexandre Hleb (pictured).
Arsenal defender Kolo Toure believes that the Dutch referee gave the wrong decision, and said after the match at the Emirates: "I think it was a penalty, but the referee did not give it to us. It's difficult, but what can you do?"
Kuyt himself was quick to point out that the job is only half done for Liverpool, and that the Gunners are more than capable of turning things around.
He said: "Everybody knows what happened to Milan in the last round. We know what a good team Arsenal can be. I think it (Liverpool's away goal) is really crucial."
Chelsea now have a task on their hands to book a semi-fianal place against the winners of that tie, as they have to overturn a 2-1 deficit after Fenerbahce came from behind to beat them in Istanbul.
Midfielder Michael Ballack was visibly frustrated after the match, and the Germany international admitted: "We had the game in our hands."
Fenerbahce's Deivid grabbed plenty of the headlines after his stunning late strike atoned for his earlier own goal, but it was former Sheffield United player Colin Kazim-Richards coming off the bench to equalise that was the real story for many.
The London-born striker was on a high after the match, and he acknowledged the task his side will face at Stamford Bridge, but was bullish about their prospects of progressing.
