Cosmin Contra struck in the final minute to give Getafe an invaluable 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final at the Allianz Arena.

Michael Laudrup's side were trailing 1-0 to a Luca Toni goal but equalised when full-back Contra, a veteran of the Alaves team who lost a thrilling UEFA Cup final to Liverpool in 2001, chipped Oliver Kahn.

It was a heavy blow for Bayern, the tournament favourites who should have had much more to show for their superiority than Toni's 26th minute header from a corner.

"It was a terrible result," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said after a match played in pouring rain. "We should have scored two or three more and we paid the price for it."

The Bavarians can still dream of a treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Cup but they will have to show a more ruthless streak in the second leg back in Spain on April 10.

After a series of chances for Toni, Ribery and Lukas Podolski they made the breakthrough with a simple goal. Bastian Schweinsteiger sent over an outswinging corner and Toni rose highest to head the ball in.

Getafe almost grabbed an equaliser in the 45th minute when Mario stole in to deflect an Albin free-kick just wide and soon after the restart Casquero sent a shot sailing high and wide when he should have scored.

Bayern could have had at least a couple more on the break but poor control let them down at crucial moments.

As Getafe grew in self-belief, Manu headed against a post with six minutes to go and as the seconds ticked down Albin got clear on the right and brought a good save from Kahn.

The ball finally broke to Contra bursting into the area on the right and the Romanian defender brilliantly controlled with his chest before deftly sweeping into the top of the net.
