Kavanagh keen to finish the job

Sat 03 May, 02:00 PM

Graham Kavanagh is desperate to help Sheffield Wednesday "get the job done" in their final-day decider against Norwich on Sunday. The on-loan Sunderland midfielder is available after missing out the vital 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Leicester at the Walkers Stadium through injury.

He told Wednesday World: "I've had a good week of rehab and I had a fitness test on Thursday with no problems so I'll be looking to get the all-clear.

"It's all to play for against Norwich and I want to play and contribute in an important way."

While the Owls prepare for their biggest game since the 2005 League One play-off final, Norwich will approach the game safe in the knowledge they will be playing Championship football again next season.

But Kavanagh has issued caution amid suggestions the Canaries may begin their summer holidays prematurely.

"Norwich have been playing with pressure, like ourselves, but now they're safe they might play with a more cavalier approach," he added.

"We need to be fully focused and above all we can't concede an early goal. If we do that news will filter through to the other clubs at the bottom and give their players a real lift.

"But the most important thing is our fate remains in our hands. We don't need to rely on anyone else so let's make sure we get the job done."

Striker Akpo Sodje has admitted his emotions could get the better of him if Wednesday survive.

Sodje succumbed to a season-ending ankle injury at the end of January and has looked on with growing frustration as the Owls have flitted in and out of the bottom three.

He said: "There's every chance I'll be the first on the pitch if we win. I'll definitely be sitting in the dug-out.

"Everyone at the club knows it's been a struggle this season, but it's in our hands now - as long as we win, we stay up and that's all that matters."
