Lyon Extend Lead After Nice Draw

Sat 03 May, 10:09 PM

Lyon extended their lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table to five points as they fought out a hard-earned 0-0 draw at Nice on Saturday.

Les Gones, who are closing in on a seventh successive title, hit the woodwork twice in the first half but could not find the goal that would have put them seven points clear of Bordeaux.

Les Girondins have the chance to cut the gap to two points when they play their game in hand at Marseille on Sunday.

Nice stay ninth with two rounds of fixtures left in the campaign.

Mohamed Fofana scored a last-gasp deflected equaliser to earn Toulouse a 1-1 draw against Paris St Germain in their relegation battle.

Bernard Mendy looked as if he had earned all three points for PSG when he drove home a low shot just after the hour mark but defender Fofana popped up in the 88th minute to claim a point for Tefece.

The result means both teams move on to 39 points and it is still all to play for at the bottom with just two weeks left in the campaign.

Sochaux failed to get the win that would have guaranteed their place in Ligue 1 next season after drawing a blank against already-demoted Metz.

However, Les Lionceaux will still be confident of securing survival as they remain five points clear of the relegation zone with two games remaining.

Both sides had chances to take the lead, with the ball being cleared off both goallines in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

Nancy thrashed lowly Strasbourg 3-0 to move into third place and give their opponents a mountain to climb to avoid relegation.

Strasbourg are four points from safety after first-half goals from Pascal Berenguer and Marc-Antoine Fortune and Moncef Zerka's 58th-minute effort sealed a comprehensive win for Nancy.

Auxerre all but sealed their Ligue 1 future with a 2-0 victory over Valenciennes.

Goals in either half from Kevin Lejeune and Ireneusz Jelen earned Auxerre three points that put them five clear of the drop zone with two games left to play.

Le Mans' hopes of sneaking into the top five suffered a setback as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Lorient.

The result leaves Le Mans only one point behind fifth-placed St Etienne, who play sixth-placed Lille on Sunday.
