Premier League - Fantasy: Choose 'em or Lose 'em

Eurosport - Sat, 03 May 08:28:00 2008

With two weeks to play we hope that your Fantasy League is as tight as the Premier League. We are also wishing that the penultimate edition of our weekly tips will help somebody clinch a title.

FOOTBALL Blackburn Rovers Roque Santa Cruz v Arsenal Carling Cup quarter-final 2007 - 0

STRIKERS

Choose 'em

If you don't fancy Roque Santa Cruz (16.41) at home to Derby this week because he's too expensive, just ask Emmanuel Adebayor (23.96 after a week at Pride Park) owners how they feel about the Paraguayan ace's chances against "the worst top-flight Rams team since Los Angeles 1982."

As the cheapest of Aston Villa's high-priced strike force Gabriel Agbonlahor (14.17) is worth a place at home against Wigan.

For those of you who need more of a bargain buy, James McFadden (10.73) and Brian McBride (8.45) could have some fun in the fight for survival between Birmingham and Fulham at Craven Cottage, while Middlesbrough's Tuncay (8.70) faces a keeper-depleted Pompey.

Lose 'em

Now that Michael Owen (13.29) has "saved" Newcastle's season he seems content to slink back into mediocrity and should have a difficult time doing anything against Chelsea.

Mirroring real life, Fernando Torres (19.75) has obviously been one of the best players in Fantasy life this season, but a hamstring injury could mean he will miss the final two games of the season.

Yakubu's (12.19) ten-game goal scoring drought does not seem likely to end when Everton face Arsenal at the Emirates.

MIDFIELDERS

Choose 'em

David Bentley (17.79) is a decently priced luxury against Derby, as is Champions League hero Frank Lampard (17.52) at Newcastle.

Birmingham's Sebastian Larsson's (14.11) return from injury against Liverpool last week was a success, and look for the Swedish danger-man to wreak havoc on Fulham.

Ryan Giggs (10.68) and Joe Cole (10.51) are very affordable for the two sides still vying for the Premier League title, while in the cheap section Kieran Richardson (7.08) looks set to start again against lowly Bolton.

Lose 'em

It's apparently too late for Martin Petrov (15.97) or anyone else at Manchester City to save Sven Goran-Eriksson's job, and though the team could send a signal to owner Thaksin Shinawatra with a performance at Anfield they probably won't.

Geremi's (13.49) form has been impressive of late, but Chelsea have so much more to play for then Toon at this point.

It's very easy to get tempted by Clint Dempsey (9.22) for Fulham's last stand against Birmingham, but even at that rate the Texan is overpriced.

DEFENDERS

Choose 'em

If you feel like a splurge Martin Laursen (11.85) is your best-bet, while the ill Olof Mellberg (8.06) could be a Scandinavian deal worthy of Ikea if he plays when Aston Villa host Wigan.

Martin Skrtel (6.57) is a doubt for Liverpool against Man City making Sami Hypia (7.43) the likely starter and a good deal at a good price.

Spurs visit the Madejski Stadium with Reading playing for their Premier League lives and Jonathan Woodgate (5.76) could play a key role in sending Reading down.

Lose 'em

After his goal-scoring exploits last week against Aston Villa, Joseph Yobo (9.46) is unlikely to repeat the stunt when Everton visit the Emirates.

For his part Gael Clichy (11.94) looks overpriced against the Tofees.

George McCartney (9.79) set up a goal last week against Newcastle, but with West Ham visiting Old Trafford this week their will be little time for the Belfast man to attack.

GOALKEEPERS

Choose 'em

With Aston Villa still vying for a European spot next year we really like Scott Carson (6.96) at home to still-not-officially-safe-from-the-drop Wigan.

Though woeful Bolton will be desperate for points at home, Sunderland's Craig Gordon (1.83) is still our best "cheapskate" option of the week.

As for our "sure-fire bet because he's playing Derby this week" of the week, Blackburn's Brad Friedel (11.60) is expensive but worth the price if you can afford the Ohioan.

Lose 'em

Tim Howard (10.04) led this column last week, ultimately conceding two goals to Aston Villa, and he is top of the drop 'em category again against Arsenal, who scored four goals against the American at Goodison Park in December.

Those who expect Kasey Keller (6.94) to keep Fulham afloat in their crunch match against relegation rivals Birmingham should think again.
