Premier League - Rooney: I'll be at United for life

Eurosport - Sun, 03 May 11:27:00 2009

Wayne Rooney wants to end his career at Manchester United and is ready to sign a new contract with the club.

The England star joined United from Everton for £26million in 2004 and still has three years remaining on his contract.

The forward said he would like to emulate Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes by finishing his playing days at Old Trafford.

The pair have recently brought up 800 and 600 games for the club respectively, while the 23-year-old Rooney already has 231 to his name.

"It would be brilliant to do what Giggsy and Scholesy have done with United," said Rooney.

"To play so many games for this club like they have is unbelievable and if I got anywhere near what they've achieved I'd be very happy.

"I love it at United and I will be here for as long as the club wants to keep me.

"I haven't spoken to the club about a new contract yet, but I'd sign one tomorrow if they offered it to me.

"I've still got three years left on my deal, but I will sign an extension to that any time the club wants me to. The bottom line is that I want to stay at this club for the rest of my career."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Rooney, who produced a brilliant performance in United's 2-0 win against Middlesbrough on Saturday, would be a worthy heir to Giggs as PFA Player of the Year.

"Wayne Rooney is definitely Footballer of the Year material - along with Ryan Giggs and Nemanja Vidic. He's definitely been consistent enough and if Wayne won it I don't think anyone would argue," said Ferguson.

"He just keeps showing things that are special. He wants to play all the time, he has this unbelievable appetite to win, and it doesn't matter where you ask him to play he will give everything."

The Scot also paid tribute to Rooney's versatility, with the former Everton man spending much of the season playing in a wide midfield role away from his preferred position as a second striker.

"He jokes with me that his best position is centre-half - well, maybe he'll get a chance to prove that one day," said Ferguson.

"Rooney has all the ingredients. He can play anywhere because he's got the desire to be unselfish for the team."

comment 64, fayjohn7396. If Liverpool were the number 1 team in the league, then they would be top. If we have a quick look at the table, we see they're currently second best. That may not always be the case, but for now, that's the way it is.

  17. Rooney not only found the right club. but the right manager for him. His only major defect is his lack of self-control when losing it on pitch, but that tendency is significantly less than it once was, and I believe will continue to improve especially under the stewardship of Alex Fergeson. He is rapidly becoming a class of his own. There are few if any players who operate now at his level as a top of the range all-rounder, and his admiration and desire to emulate the likes of Giggs and Scholes only demonstrates the depth of his character, which he has developed over his career at Utd, something I don't think would have happened at any other club. His progress from talented thug to brilliant footballer is a delight, and as long as he stays with Utd., they are likely to be always there or thereabouts. I reckon he will be footballer of the year and potentially the best in the world at some time if he continues like he is...
