Transfers - Gossip Shop: Wenger to Real Madrid

Eurosport - Sun, 03 May 12:55:00 2009

Real Madrid's 6-2 hammering at the hands of Barcelona could spell the end for Juande Ramos as the club renew their efforts to prise Arsene Wenger away from Arsenal.

2008-2009 Arsenal Arsene Wenger - 0

Real were taken apart by Barca as an incredible 18-game unbeaten run came crashing to a halt in a manner with which British followers of Ramos will be familiar.

And after being taught a footballing lesson in front of their own fans, Real chiefs - particularly ego-in-chief Florentino Perez, who is hotly tipped to return as president in the summer - are targeting one of the highest-profile names in the game. Again.

But the good news for Arsenal fans - if the News of the World is to be believed - is that Wenger has snubbed a mammoth £40 million offer from the Spanish champions to stay in North London for life.

Manchester United are set to offer Wayne Rooney a £30m deal over five years to stay at Old Trafford.

Rooney, who is currently scratching by on £90,000 a week and would go up to £120,000 under the proposed terms, said he wants to emulate Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes by seeing out his playing days at Old Trafford.

"I love it at United and I will be here for as long as the club wants to keep me," he said.

"I haven't spoken to the club about a new contract yet, but I'd sign one tomorrow if they offered it to me.

"The bottom line is that I want to stay at this club for the rest of my career."

Once a red, always a red, eh, Wayne?

United will offer Jonny Evans a new deal in the close season while they can expect to be hit in the pocket if they offer the splendidly-named Reuben Noble-Lazarus a deal following his two-week trial.

Barnsley will ask for £2m in compensation after allowing the youngster, who became the Football League's youngest debutant at 15 years and 45 days earlier this season, to 'try out' for the American club.

One good season in Holland has apparently restored Schteeve McKlaaren's reputation to the point where a Premier League club is prepared to offer him gainful employment, according to The People.

The Wally with the Brolly heads a Sunderland shortlist which includes lothario-for-hire Sven-Goran Eriksson and former Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal.

McClaren's arrival is a key part of US billionaire Ellis Short's strategy for the club - he owns just under 30 per cent of the club and is set to snap up the rest from the Drumaville Group, although Niall Quinn will remain as chairman.

Michael Owen's departure from Newcastle will be rubber-stamped today when Alan Shearer leaves him out against Liverpool.

Everton are interested in The Artist Formerly Known As Half-Decent, but only on a pay-as-you-play basis owing to his permanently crocked status.

Owen's old club Liverpool have been thwarted in their latest bid for Valencia's David Silva and may have to settle for Stewart Downing, who is holding out for a £12m switch to Anfield.

Silly old Manchester City are targeting the following summer signings: Lionel Messi, John Terry, Jose Mourinho , Yaya Toure, Pope John Paul II and big-haired Maoist 70s utility man Paul Breitner.

That will make it a crowded old dressing room at Eastlands, which is why City will offload Micah Richards to Aston Villa for £7m.

It's squeaky bum time for Birmingham who are 90 minutes at Reading from missing chucking away automatic promotion.

But it does not matter a jot to manager Alex McLeish, apparently, who will leave St Andrew's at the end of the season whether the club go up or not.

Finally, two odd rumours featuring Tottenham midfielders; Internazionale want Jermaine Jenas and Bayern Munich will sign Tom Huddlestone just as soon as they get their hands on ex-Spurs boss Martin Jol.

  3. Real may offer a lot but Arsene going there - that somehow does not seem sensible. He has got a real talented bunch of kids at Arsenal and he would like to see them lift a trophy or two before he leaves. A few seasons down the line maybe but not now.

  4. This is NOT going to happen . Wenger knows that Madrid's job is the least stable of all coaching positions . The big egos at Madrid like nothing but bring their own cronies no matter how good or accomplished the current head coach is . If Wenger decides to take the job afterall , he will probably join the rank of the unemployed at the end of his first year !!

  5. Why would we want Michael Owen? We already have a waiting list for beds at the local hospital. We don't want another crock: Van der Meyde, King Louis plus half a dozen regulars all warming the bed pans this season! What we want are bright young things with strong bones! Not ageing has-beens.

  7. Elson: the manager was Capello, you have to wonder what is the mind of the top brass at the likes of of Madrid and Inter Milan. You had managers that won the Spanish and and Italian leagues and yet you are still sacked. In Capello's case he was there only one season........wtf.

  8. i don't believe it is good to bring wenger to Madrid
and i really hope Perez lose the election
Madrid need players which can play football with their whole heart like messi
not just a star which thinks their name is important than playing football
Perez can ruin Madrid just like when Madrid in galactico era if he keep his intention to sign big names...

  12. Amazing isnt it, you can do a good job your whole life. One screw up and you are done. The last Real Madrid manager (I dont remember his name) helped Real win the league last season. This season, he was sacked BEFORE the first game against Barca. Why? Because he said that it would be hard to beat Barca since many of his star players were injured or under suspension.

  14. I think Wenger is getting too arrogant, all he needs to do is spend a few million to sort that defence out and he has a true title challenging team, instead he will persisit again with kids in the back 4 and blow the league again by Feb 2010. As long as Arsenal keep a @#$% back 4 like that they will only be nearly men and lose the real quality at the club like Fabregas because they wont hang around too long.

  17. arsenal supporters have enoyed a sustained period of success since mr wenger joined our club.i believe there is more to come.the premiership needs managers like sir alex,mr wenger,mr benitez, and thier like.its a shame mr mouriniho left the prem league.the man was a genius at press conferences.
i understand some arsenal supporters are agrieved that we haven't won anything for a few seasons, but there are teams that haven't won anything for decades.
i hope he stays, but WE ALL have a price.what you do if another firm offerd to double, treble your wages?
    me?i'd stay,money isn't everything!

  18. here's an idea,Juande ramos is fine as long as he doen't have to play barca and some say that barca is the best team in europe, while others say that EPL is the best league in the world...well then, let's move barca to the epl for a year and MAN U to La Liga and see if both still finish on top, fifa certainly has enough money to arrange that, surely millions would love to see it happen and suddenly, more british would watch la liga and more spaniards the Premier league.

arsenal woun't allow wenger to go, not after selling their mature and experienced players, he has to stay and reap what he sowed !!! he likes small boys, real madrid don't have much young boys, he will not leave !! small boys club for life , wenger !!!
