Bluebirds struck down by Owls

Sun 03 May, 03:52 PM

Jermaine Johnson's stunning volley robbed Cardiff of a Championship play-off place in cruel circumstances as they lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Jamaica international Johnson thundered home a spectacular volley that floored the Welshmen midway through the second half and they never recovered.

Dave Jones' Bluebirds needed at least a draw to guarantee themselves a top-six finish, but once Johnson's rocket flew in they looked a crestfallen lot.

This gut-wrenching last-day defeat, coupled with Preston's 2-1 home win over QPR, sees the Lancashire side pip them to a play-off spot by the narrowest of margins.

Both sides finished on 74 points with identical goal difference, but Jones' boys missed out by virtue of having scored a goal less than Preston.

Cardiff have taken only one point from their last four matches, conceding 12 goals in the process, and will look back at their shocking 6-0 defeat to Preston last month as the day they threw their season away.

  1. ahorler.....Here we go again....Cardiff City Finished higher than The Foreign legion down the road.so therefore you are the second best team in Wales OFFICIAL!. if you have any problems with that ask your teacher to explain (if you have them on your camp site) And yes Cardiff are not good enough to go up but every season we are getting closer. Swansea played some great football all season and out played Cardiff on all occasion's but its a point business and ccfc finished higher and will do so next season.

  2. limo1walesl cardiff @#$% are no where good enough for premiership they failed to reach play offs failed to beat the jacks so how come you think they good enough for premiership you obviouslly know nothing about football and have got your just deserts NOTHING what a @#$% head . jacks for promotion next year with pure football . come on the jacks lol

  3. I have been a Cardiff fan all my life, but after they threw away the chance for promotion I will never watch them again. Cardiff do not want premiership football, they are happy where they are, and that is not fair on their fans. I hope next season they get less than a thousand supporters every game. Then maybe if they are in a possision for promotion they don't blatantly throw it. Their last four results could not have been more obvious. The only way Preston could have cought them was to get the result they did against Cardiff, a side that had not lost by more than one goal all season, that was not nerves but sabotage on their own behalf. If they were going to throw it then they could have' at the very least' did it in the final of the playoffs.

  4. TULIP: If you judge your season on finishing one place above a team in its debut season in the Championship then it is no wonder that your team failed to reached the the play-offs (let alone automatic promotion) with fans like you.

What a very sad way for a Cardiff fan to view the season - The 'Jacks' will be looking back at this season with a little dissapointment that their wonderfull passing game didnt get them to the play-offs but, can be happy they gained many plaudits for the way they played all season. Remember, this was their first season in the second tier for many years (not forgetting knocking you out of the Carling Cup and having a great FA Cup run) and next season I truely believe they will be stronger and pushing for automatic promotion. How many seasons have Cardiff been in the division now and the best they can come up with is one place above their poor, local rivals.....oh dear

  5. cardiff are not good enough by a long way for the premiership chopra has been useless should of giving eddie johnson a fair chance instead of bringing him on with a few minutes to go wat player is going to shine in that situation we are just an ordianary championship side nothing special and we will struggle next year thats for sure with probably are best player of the season is roger johnson we need to keep hold of him the rest are just average players as simple as that. over and out cardiff city over rated one pissed off cardiff city fan and even the rugby lost today they got a new stadium now they just need 10 descent players to fill it now.

  6. ha ha ha you got what you deserved after your loud mouth fans went on radio the radio 4 weeks ago gobbing off about how you would be getting automatic promotion and how easily you would despatch preston and you would win all your remaining games. the whole league is laughing at you and your mindless muppet fans
