Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton defended goalkeeper Chris Weale after two mistakes gifted Colchester a 2-0 victory.
In the 13th minute Mark Yeates shook off the attentions of Terrell Forbes to set up Ashley Vincent who fired under the body of the diving Weale to register his first goal since a loan move from Cheltenham.
Two minutes later Weale was at fault again. This time Simon Hackney sent Yeates away on the right and his shot from the edge of the box again evaded the on-loan Bristol City keeper at his near post.
But Skiverton refused to criticise the 27-year-old and said: "I wanted to wring his neck before I sent him back but to be honest he has been immense for us - and it was his goal (at Hereford) that probably kept us up."
Skiverton is now relishing the prospect of using the summer break to improve his squad ahead of next season.
He added: "I've enjoyed my short spell in charge and now look forward to some hard work in the summer to tie up contracts and bring in players we need for next season."
