Redknapp hails Gomes

Sun 03 May, 02:08 PM

Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes could have left White Hart Lane in January - but he is now leading their charge for a European place.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was offered the £8million that the club paid for the Brazilian in the summer but he stuck with 28-year-old, despite a string of high-profile mistakes earlier in the season.

Helped by goalkeeper coach Tony Parks and pushed by the arrival Carlo Cudicini to add competition, Gomes has cemented his place as Redknapp's number one. Victory against West Brom on Saturday, Spurs' fourth 1-0 win at White Hart Lane in a row, came after Gomes defied Jonas Olsson and Robert Koren.

"He's number one, obviously because I'm picking him," Redknapp said. "Carlo came in and did well but he's been unlucky because this fella has been in great form.

"A lot of the credit for that goes to Tony Parks, and a lot of it goes to Carlo for coming here. He's not happy with the situation but Gomes knows he has to play well now to keep his place because the goalkeeper behind him is terrific.

"No disrespect to the other goalkeeper coach (Hans Leiter), I brought Tony in and he's got into his head and they work well, he's done great with him."

  1. I think Gomes will be one of the top keepers in the league next season. Thorsvedt had a dodgy start and became one of Tottenhams best keepers. Lets give Gomes a chance.

Harry, wake up, hes south american, he'll never be good enough for a side that wants to be at the top end of the table. South americans flap at the ball, cant catch, they always did, they always will, no coach can cure that. you'd be better off putting parks between the sticks. I'm sure cudicini would be better long term, but ideally get someone new in as he's getting past his sell by date too.
