Rovers sunk by late Wolves winner

Sun, 03 May 15:36:40 2009

Wolves ended their Championship title-winning campaign with a injury-time 1-0 victory over Doncaster at Molineux.

Richard Stearman headed home Stephen Ward's cross in the 91st minute to give Wolves the win that saw them finish seven points clear of Birmingham at the top of the league.

It had looked as though as the promotion party would begin on the back of a stalemate as Doncaster more than held their own throughout the game and they almost took the lead when James Hayter brought a fine save out of Wayne Hennessey.

Kevin Foley went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when he rifled a shot into the post, while Hayter shot wide from six yards for Doncaster.

And it was Rovers that dominated the second half with Hennessey forced into three good saves to deny Hayter and Lewis Guy and just as Wolves were to settle for a point, Stearman popped up in injury time with a header to kick off the promotion celebrations in style.
