Saints wait for Setanta news

St Johnstone's hopes of bolstering their squad for next season's return to the Scottish Premier League have been hit by Setanta's bid to renegotiate the upcoming television deal with top-flight clubs.

Saints on Saturday ended their seven-year exile from the elite of the Scottish game when they beat Morton 3-1 to land the Irn-Bru First Division title when a game to spare.

Chairman Geoff Brown revealed he cannot give manager Derek McInnes a budget until Setanta and the SPL decide whether to reduce the terms of their recently-agreed £125million television contract, and Brown said: "I've been reading about the Setanta thing and that needs to be resolved before we can see where we're at."

He added: "However, most sides that have gone up have shown what's possible if you can just get off to a good start.

"I don't believe there's that much difference between the bottom six in the SPL and the top half of the First Division."

St Johnston would have been champions regardless of Saturday's result after nearest rivals Partick Thistle suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Airdrie.

Second-bottom United's win gave them a chance of pulling off a great escape from a relegation play-off after Ross County were held to a 2-2 draw by Livingston.

Elsewhere in the First Division, Dunfermline won 3-0 at Queen of the South and Clyde beat Dundee 2-0.

Raith Rovers boss John McGlynn hailed his side for coming good when it mattered after they clinched the Second Division title with a 1-0 win at Queen's Park.

Raith and Ayr United had been neck and neck for much of the season but the latter could only draw 1-1 with Alloa to hand their rivals the championship.
