Boro move to front of Gera queue

Tue 03 Jun, 08:00 PM

Middlesbrough have emerged as the leading contenders for Zoltan Gera's signature after officially entering the race for the West Brom winger. The Hungary midfielder is out of contract at The Hawthorns and is expected to make a decision on his future by the end of this week.

The 29-year-old is unlikely to sign the new deal on the table at Albion after boss Tony Mowbray refused to improve the terms just because his agents were 'hawking' him around to potential suitors.

And that has opened the door for several admirers, with Bolton, Everton, Wigan, Aston Villa, Celtic and Portuguese side Benfica all reportedly interested in him.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate, however, believes he can offer the most lucrative package funded by Steve Gibson's millions - and the Teessiders have had a long-standing interest in Gera, having made a formal enquiry about him in the January transfer window 17 months ago.

  1. Boro have two outstanding wingers in Downing and Johnstone, what on earth is Southgate thinking of. We need to strengthen the midfield to be a better side, instead of adding another winger and and upsetting the existing wingers, when selecting a team to put out. Come on Southgate - GET A GRIP.
