Mowbray confirms hunt for keeper

Tue 03 Jun, 07:45 PM

Tony Mowbray has revealed he wants three goalkeepers fighting for the West Brom jersey amid talk of him making a loan bid for Scott Carson. The Baggies boss already has Republic of Ireland veteran Dean Kiely and untried Czech stopper Michel Danek on the books at The Hawthorns - but he wants to create even more competition for the number one jersey.

Carson spent a successful loan spell with Albion's Midlands neighbours Aston Villa last season, making 35 appearances as they finished sixth in the Premier League table.

But Villa boss Martin O'Neill has been put off signing the 22-year-old on a permanent basis after Liverpool rated him in the £6million bracket, opening the door for Mowbray to make a move.

Carson does not want to play second fiddle to Pepe Reina at Anfield, so would jump at the offer or more regular first-team football as he bids to catch the eye of England coach Fabio Capello.

And Mowbray has confirmed he is in the market for a new keeper, saying: "It is something we have talked about and having three goalkeepers is probably the thing to do in the Premier League. Having good competition is generally good for them and it is down to them on the training ground.

"They know they have to be very focused out on the pitch because there are two other guys waiting to grab an opportunity. It is up to me to know when to give those people the opportunity," he told the Express & Star.

Kiely, meanwhile, seems to be relishing the competition for a first-team place and has tipped his boss to get it right in this summer's transfer market.

"I wouldn't trust anyone else more than Tony Mowbray with money to spend," said the Albion number one. "He will get the right sort of person in, not just as footballers, but also as people.

"We have a good team ethic and a good work ethic at West Brom, so next year is something that I am really looking forward to being part of."

  1. As a long standing Fan, I think Albion need strengtening at the back for the strenuous task ahead in the Premier league, also a couple of class forwards would not go amiss.
