Chinese Team Raring To Go

Tue 03 Jun, 06:09 PM

Money is certainly no object to Sir Tony and Lady Chryss O'Reilly, but there is great excitement flowing from the Irish camp about Chinese White's prospects in Friday's Juddmonte Oaks at Epsom.

While Lady O'Reilly is a shipping heiress and stud owner, her husband has made his fortune in media and the Heinz food company and collectively they are among the wealthiest people in the world, let alone the Emerald Isle.

That is still not always enough to guarantee sporting success but their filly, trained by Dermot Weld, is not short of supporters and currently lies at second-favourite behind Lush Lashes.

The position comes on the back of an easy victory in last month's Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes at Gowran Park, although Weld did not initially point Chinese White towards Epsom.

"We are apprehensive but of course we are looking forward to it," said James Kelly, who works at Castlemartin Stud as Lady O'Reilly's racing manager.

"It is our first runner in an English Classic. We have been involved in many great races but Chinese White goes there as a serious contender.

"She did not run for a long time last year as she was quite backward and took a while to come right.

"This season she again took a long time to come in her coat. Dermot wisely decided to miss both of the Guineas and instead go for a trial race.

"She won well at Gowran and Dermot felt she would tell us if she wanted to go over a mile and a quarter or needed a mile and a half.

"She has really improved and we then discussed whether to go for an Oaks or start off in a Group Three in Ireland then look at the Irish Oaks.

"Dermot informed Lady O'Reilly and Sir Anthony of the choices and it was decided as she is such a lovely horse, it would almost be rude not to have a shot at the Oaks."

Epsom has plenty of critics among the racing community, but not Kelly.

He continued: "Epsom have also been so good with us. She has won on both fast ground and soft going, but they assured us there would be no jar in the ground.

"With the weather they are having it has not actually mattered, but the course has been brilliant at informing us on the ground and we felt it was the right thing to do to run."

Aidan O'Brien's Adored was the best-backed Oaks contender with totesport, with Johnny Murtagh expected to ride in preference to stablemate Sail.

Spokesman Damian Walker said: "Our Oaks betting last Friday had Adored at 20-1 with stablemate Sail at 13-2 and it seemed Johnny Murtagh would get the leg-up on the more fancied O'Brien runner.

"But since then Sail has been friendless, while Adored has been all the rage. We cut Adored to 12-1 from 14-1 this morning and again to 9-1. Sail is out to 10-1 and, if money talks, then Murtagh will take the mount."

Ralph Beckett believes the recent rainfall in Epsom will aid the chances of Look Here.

After defeating Derby contender Doctor Fremantle on her debut at Salisbury, she was beaten less than a length by Miracle Seeker in the Lingfield Oaks Trial having been forced wide throughout.

The Whitsbury handler said: "Things did not fall right for her at Lingfield and I would be hopeful she could beat the winner on this softer ground.

"It was good to soft when she won her maiden and the form of that race obviously looks strong. I don't think there were any excuses for Doctor Fremantle.

"I have trained two of her relatives and they both wanted some cut in the ground.

"The other thing is she is guaranteed to stay the trip, which can't be said of a few of the Oaks runners.

"She is in great form and I'm very hopeful she will be in the shake-up."

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Cape Amber completed her own preparation with a spin on Tuesday morning.

The trainer told his stable website: "Cape Amber is in great form and seems to get better every day. I'm just looking forward to the race on Friday."
