Not just any old irons

Eurosport - Tue, 03 Jun 19:48:00 2008

Ping's G10 irons were designed with the average club slugger in mind. The company's marketing team promise consistency, forgiveness and a higher ball plane, not to mention a whopping sweet spot. They had us at consistency.

Put simply, these rather attractive sticks have been prescribed to limit your embarrassment on the golf course. But before you can get them unwrapped and out on the range, there are some seriously tricky decisions to make.

Shafts come in steel or graphite, and there's the degree of torque to consider in making your choice. Then there's the level of flex, and the colour and design of which grips to go for. If you're not tech-savvy the process can seem a little overwhelming, but thankfully Ping's excellent team are on hand to ensure you get a bespoke service.

When the clubs arrive, the shallow part of your golfing soul will somersault with joy. With their dark cavity heads, embossed with subtle orange lettering, these irons are particularly easy on the eye. These are not the showy, gauche weapons of that "all the gear, no idea" set, more a symbol of understated class.

The first thing you notice is just how ridiculously light they are. All the weight is in the toe, and as a result you might initially feel you're swinging an imaginary club. Compared to my older set, they took some getting used to, and it's well advised you spend a good amount of time on the range before unleashing these beasts on the course.

When you do, you'll find Ping's G10 irons do exactly what they say on the tin. On my first outing I was hitting clubs 10 yards further than usual, and the number of serious errors fell dramatically (from a massive amount, to a just a lot). My ball flight was indeed higher, and there was no sign of numbing vibrations through the hands. Most importantly, these irons improved my consistency and you can't put a price on that.
