Relegated Newcastle and Middlesbrough have been handed byes into the second round of the Carling Cup.

Newcastle's management team of Iain Dowie and Alan Shearer watch on, as Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate in the background. - 2

The Championship new boys were due to launch their campaigns in the first round during the opening week of the new season.

However, Wednesday's confirmation that England will not be granted any further places in the Europa League has resulted in both the Magpies and Boro going straight into round two during the week beginning August 24 - due to their status as the highest-ranked of the potential first-round entrants.

Newcastle went out of the competition in the third round at home to Tottenham last season, while the Teessiders had the misfortune to encounter eventual winners Manchester United at Old Trafford at the same stage.

it seems that the fans are already conspiring on how to dispose of brucey,he aint started the job yet,i say to the cats dont make the mistakes of newcy get behind brucey.granny

you can tell by his little rants that he's anybodies for a glass of "white lightning"

  4. I'm already on the chill pills man, two a day to be precise. Don't worry I'm trying to say that it'll be good to have Newcastle back up. Good team with a lot of history.

On the subject of Sunderland here. I don't get why you lot think Bruce won't do any good. He was good for Wigan until thye sold some players at the start of the year. That's what he need, good palyers that can gell together. He is a much better manager than the previous -x- Man U star...

  5. Hutch, he may have to put on a pork pie hat and a mac to get out of the place alive by the end of the year, mind you the big bread bun in the middle of his face is a dead give away.

For Heaven's sake man take a chill pill; there are more important things in life - we'll be on the Championship pages as soon as next season's fixture list is published.
As for you, safcalsftm you ought to get a sense of humour (comment-18), and a pair of none-safc-tinted specs mate; read the comments, Mr Bruce's appointment (judging by comments on Yahoo pages) is about 50/50 in terms of appeasing safc fans - and nobody's even mentioned erm, 'the big name' manager?
And please tell me, how are we staring down the barrel of League-1?
If we unload the high rollers (for free if necessary), we've got good youngsters and could bring in a couple of new hungry faces (no more so-called 'big names' please!).
I watched a lot of Championship football last season, as i had a feeling we'd be there next season (ask jack), and a handful of clubs aside, i was not impressed! So, sorry to burst your bubble, but we won't be heading for League-1; oh yes i almost forgot about that, you lot know all about that league don't you? Oh and please save your pity; try exchanging it for a dose of humility.

  7. I'll be surprised if Brucie does well at Sunderland. He hasn't got a very good track record and it was well known he was wanting out of Wigan so anywhere would have done. Maybe he should start wearing a pork pie hat? That will make him more like Bob Stokoe straight away.

  8. I DON'T SUPPORT ANY NORTH EAST TEAM BUT I CAN SAY BRUCE IS NOT THE RIGHT MAN FOR SUNDERLAND.

    From john.connolly01, on Thu 4 Jun 5:35PM
  10. John (comment 19) I'm old enough to remember Bob Stokoe being appointed - not universally received with open arms due to unfortunate past but he led the team to glory beating the Man Utd of the day and there is now a statue in his memory outside the stadium. Also, don't judge our fans by the standards of yours. Forgive and forget, like Len Shackleton did (another former bar-code from the Fifties who became a Sunderland legend and rememebr Shack's matra: "I'm not biased when it comes to Newcastle, I'm not bothered who beats them!"

  11. Why are Newcastle still on the Yahoo premier league? Haven't you been relegated?... Now pee of to your own page and maybe we'll see you back up after the end of next season.

From lee, on Thu 4 Jun 5:07PM
  12. Comment 18, whenever you find the time, go onto the SAFC site and read the comments from the Sunderland fans concerning Brucies appointment. I haven't counted them but I would say theirs a good 50/50 split and a lot of them are not happy at all. This will be reflected in your ground at the start of the season and if you dont start well, half of them will turn on him and make matters worse (Allardyce).
Jack predicts breaking into the top 10 in three years, a fair assumption and I wont argue except to say that if he's right, I think it will be the first time Brucie will have done that in a 14 year managerial career. On the other hand, your expectations are a lot higher and in my opinion unrealistic (you are building a side that has only just avoided relegation). If Sunderland are in say the bottom four as the season progresses and especially if the Toon are up the top end of the Championship (they wont always be without a manager and owner and who knows who's coming in) what will your opinion of Brucie be.
I understand your excitement, nothing at all wrong with that but I think you are getting a little bit carried away. If however you do believe what you say, then I think you are setting yourself up for a bit of a fall.

So, going from the comments from Tony, Cameron et al, it would appear that The Doon Army want to give the “Huge Club” (Steve Bruce’s description) down the road an effective bye into the third. That’s fine by me. That’s enough mind, all this laughing at your expense has got to stop as my sides are killing after nearly 11 days of non-stop guffawing. I’m going to follow the example of the “Sunderland fan in a suit” (type that into You Tube”) and be sympathetic towards you from now all. Yes, I pity you. After all, you’re a Championship side now (best accept it) staring down the barrel towards League One without a Manager, you despise your Chairman and your Owner has gone AWOL again trying to off-load the Club (last seen desperately seeking Duncan, Freddie or even a Mustafa in Dubai) while us Mighty Mackems are “On Our Way, On Our Way, In The Premier, All The Way”. Once again, sincerest commiserations and absolute pity.

From safcalsftm, on Thu 4 Jun 1:51PM
  14. Good point as usual Cameron but if we are feeding off the scraps of the scraps, what's the chances of NUFC overhauling their team? feeding off the old detrtitis that even the lower premiership teams don't want or taking a risk on unproven young guns making a splash in league one? know which predicament I'd rather be in me old c@cksparrer. I'm on record as saying I'd like the Mags to come up next season, but it's a deceptively difficult league to break out of,unless the massively self destructive element of the club's whole infrastructure isn't pruned root and branch I can see the club imploding. How can Shearer even start to concieve a get out of gaol strategy when he doesn't even know who his employers are going to be next week? and I maintain Shearer is not the man for the job,to coin one of your phrases "it will end in tears" and the fall from grace of a Newcastle legend.

From jack torrance, on Thu 4 Jun 11:48AM
  15. Yes jack £200 million, but you gotta remember that you are going to be dining on scraps after the self-proclaimed big-4 have finished, then you've got mega-bucks man city - in fact jack you'll be dining on the scraps of the scraps, because after those 5, you will have spurs. villa and everton taking their little bits. In fact jack, you'll be dining on the scraps of the scraps of the scraps, because after that lot, you'll have still bigger fish like fulham, bolton, pompey and blackburn having their nibbles.
The future's bright alright jack, the future's pie in the sky!
On a positive note, i don't think you'll get relegated!

From cameron w, on Thu 4 Jun 10:02AM
  16. "I am in dire need of ammo" yeah that pretty much sums NUFC up at the moment cameron mate, fireing blanks, the powder is wet etc. sorry dude but this is the dawning of the age of Quinnarius. As was stated in the setanta press conference yesterday the first objective of being the best team in the North East (not biggest, best) has been achieved now with the £200 million promised a total squad overhaul as you suggest is needed, is going to happen, with that we'll threaten the mid table teams, consolidate for 2 seasons then break into the top 10.The future's bright the future's red and white.ha ha

From jack torrance, on Thu 4 Jun 8:54AM
  17. heslop, you have had a lot of poor managers (although I think Bob Murray was your biggest problem for a while), as we have had either side of wor Bobby and I think this is a good opportunity for you but reading the comments on the SAFC site I think the Geordie thing may not go away if you dont get off to a good start.

    From john.connolly01, on Wed 3 Jun 11:14PM
  18. john i think the majority of fans will be ok with it after all we've had some dross as managers in the past and i don't think a couple of defeats will make a differance but if we are at the bottom at christmas then i think his job will be very differcult it is all going to depend on who he signs and his ability to get our underachievers of last season to put some more effort in it could be a fantastic move for sunderland or a complete disaster only time will tell

    From heslop448, on Wed 3 Jun 10:27PM
  19. heslop, he aint getting too much support though is he. It's like when we got Allardyce, nobody wanted him so he had an up hill struggle from the start. I honestly think he is a good appointment but their is a lot of work to be done at Sunderland as you know, they only just avoided relegation. Each time I check the messages, more and more are negative towards him and I must admit I am suprised at how much. He will need to get off to a blinding start or he will be blamed for every defeat or bad performance and If he does bring in Bramble which has been mentioned in the media (i know it's probibly rubbish) he will make his job, well impossible.

    From john.connolly01, on Wed 3 Jun 10:21PM
