England midfielder Gareth Barry said a fear of losing his appetite for the game prompted his £12 million move from Aston Villa to Manchester City.
"I want the chance to explain my decision. I have a massive fear of going stale and falling into a comfort zone," he wrote in an open letter to Villa's fans published in the Birmingham Mail.
"After changing my mind lots of times I came to the decision that the time was right for me and the club to part."
Barry, 28, who joined Villa as a 16-year-old trainee and played more than 400 matches for the club, signed a five-year deal with Manchester City on Tuesday.
"I feel the club (Villa) is in the best position it has been in during my time here," added Barry.
"I think we have a group of very good young players, we have a fantastic chairman (Randy Lerner) who is here for the good of the club and one of the best managers (Martin O'Neill) in the game.
"Obviously, people will ask why I am leaving if I feel like that. But, after changing my mind lots of times, I came to the decision that the time was right for me and for the club to part company," he wrote in the letter.
"I believe the deal is a good one for the club, I am sure the manager will use the money well to strengthen the team and the club will go from strength to strength.
"I am also excited now about my new challenge.
"A lot of people will question my decision to join Manchester City but... I feel I am joining a club that will seriously challenge to win major honours.
"People might doubt that, but I am convinced with the plans the club has short term and long term," said Barry.
His signing could be the first of many at City in the close season as manager Mark Hughes looks to use the buying power of the club's billionaire Arab owners to build a squad that can improve on this year's 10th-place finish.

MON HAS TURNED THIS TEAM AROUND IN TWO YEARS AND ALTHOUGH WE DIDNT FINISH IN THE TOP FOUR IT WAS A BIG IMPROVEMENT AND SOMETHING FOR US TO BUILD ON NEXT SEASON.
I SAY GOOD LUCK TO GARETH BARRY WHO HAS GIVEN US GOOD SERVICE OVER A DECADE AND HAS BEEN THE MOST CONSISTENT PLAYER OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS.
GOOD LUCK GARETH AND PLEASE DONT SCORE AGAINST US NEXT SEASON :)
VILLA TILL I DIE!
Man C can buy any players with the money they have, but they cannot buy HONOURS!!!
I think the move was good for all parties, but I thought it a swipe at Villa when he said that he wanted to go to a club with a real chance of winning something. This was uncalled for. I don't see that MC have any greater chance of winning anything than AV do next season. We will strengthen in The Summer and it looks like MC will totally overhaul their squad. However good the players they are bringing in it will take time to gel and if they are to really compete at the top of the table they will have to overhaul again the following season, because so far they have bought high quality premiership players, but not World class.

GARETH BARRY: WHAT A @#$%
You'll go stale alright with NO European football next year and little chance of that the following year either.
Maybe you will get a few outings in the league cup run but this will have to fit in with the rotation system Hughes is going to have to maintain to keep his "superstars" happy.
Advice, from a Villa supporter who is actually sorry to see you go, get a cushion!because you could be sitting a long time on the bench in the next two seasons, before you move again.
so its ok 4 the villa 2 @#$% in and offer the likes of ashley young n heskey bigger contracts 2 get thr man but nt city who would nt want 2 dbl thr money i would good signing 4 city 6 more and they mite b onto a winner
@19: it's an AC/DC song from The Razor's Edge album. Just in case you were wondering. :)
no.17 ... no. I heard the song 'dirty cash' by stevie v which includes the lyric 'money talks, money talks' but i have never heard of a song called 'money talks'.
Look Gareth Barry did what every employee would have done, after all football is a profession as well. Being scouted is the same as being head hunted and usually when you are head hunted you are offered better wages and benefits in joining another company. That is what Barry did. Good for him.
EVER HEARD THE SONG MONEY TALK'S WELL THERE YOU GO.
man city challenge for to win major honours?!lmfao i bet the greedy prik jus went there for the money
of course barry, fear of losing appetite. so you walk away on your mates because you are one selfish pig. surely at city they will stuff you until you get your appetite back. pathetic man. and i have to watch these unethical valueless footballers wear england's jersey. i would rather spit than cheer for this guy now.
Thank god Barry's gone to 'Moneybags Manchester City'. To think that the tubby Spanish petulant one wanted to sign him! Mind you, he's English. I hope the great O'Neill is glad he's gone. I hope that when the tubby Spanish petulant one leaves Anfield the great O'Neill will apply for the job.
He's obviously not a very intelligent young man.
The letter is full of hypocrisy and serves as a very poor excuse for jumping ship.
He needs to change his PR team.
Seems to me there are a lot of unrealistic supporters out there and a few who have had there noses put out too. Barry has done what most people would have done in getting his wage doubled and a better possibility(courtesy of billions of pounds) of helping break the strangle hold the top four have on the premiership. Don't forget Villa fans, he has been at your club for 12 years and has little to show for this time. He is now gambling that City have the better chance to challenge for the honours in the next few years and that is not being disrespectful to other mid table side's either. After all it is money that has always talked, so Wake up everyone, this is the real world we are living in and in the real world, we would all have taken the wage hike!!
i hope that barry will not stay a long in manchetser city !!!!!!!
thanks for the letter
Thanks for the decade plus of service... at least we can all just move on from here...
At least Man C will somehow satisfy your desire to be as "fresh" as possible... Camels milk anyone???
