Premier League - Carvalho ready to quit Chelsea

Eurosport - Wed, 03 Jun 20:17:00 2009

Veteran Portuguese international defender Ricardo Carvalho is prepared to leave FA Cup winners Chelsea for a club that guarantee him first team football.

The 31-year-old - capped 50 times - has been at Chelsea since 2004 but rarely played last season because of a succession of injuries.

"I am available for a club who wishes to have me," said Carvalho, who was speaking at Portugal's training camp ahead of leaving for a World Cup qualifier in Albania.

"But before being approached, an agreement must be found with Chelsea, although I am delighted that several clubs are interested in me.

"I have had four extraordinary years at Chelsea till this year, which has not been very good, indeed the worst of my career. I wasn't in great shape, because I haven't played.

"But if there is no transfer, I will be fine at Chelsea."

Carvalho, a member of the Portugal side that reached the Euro 2004 final and the 2006 World Cup semi-finals where his foul on Thierry Henry resulted in the only goal of the match a penalty by Zinedine Zidane, won the 2004 Champions League with Porto before leaving for Chelsea for just under 20million pounds.

There, along with former Porto handler Jose Mourinho, he won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

  5. carvalho would be perfect for both man city and arsenal. carvalho should replace dunne, he was great last season but i dont think hes quite cut out to deal with the pressure at being at the richest club in the world. shame caus without that pressure last year he played really well. still think the back 4 man city should try to get is richards(RB), carvalho(CB), toure(CB), bridge-maybe(LB) with zabaleta(CDM) and kompany/de jong(CDM). . very ambitious and will never happen but would be nice to see! arsenal need him and another couple of central defenders and a world class CDM, i think they should have Sagna(RB), carvalho(CB), toure(CB), clichy(LB), frings(CDM) and maybe another player who can defend and attack like yaya toure(CM). . . what are peoples thoughts on those two defences?

  11. I would not be surprised if he goes to Arsenal, Spurs or Man City. He is a quality player but the likes of Alex, Ivanovic, Balletti, and Mancienne means that he is the odd man out.

  16. I tell you what, I'll take Carvalho on Arsenal, and you can have Gallas back. So what if he is 31. He can still play better than 95% of the Premier league defenders. Without Carvalho, you wouldn't have any titles. Go ahead and blow your wad on Kaka, and see where you finish nexr season.
