New boss Steve Bruce does not expect his Geordie roots to be held against him by Sunderland fans.
The former Birmingham boss was unveiled as the new manager of the Black Cats on Wednesday after a compensation package was finally agreed with former club Wigan.
Bruce has made no secret of the fact he was a boyhood fan of Newcastle, Sunderland's neighbours and fiercest rivals, but he does not expect that to be a problem.
"I don't think so," he said. "I think they like one of their own from the north east.
"It's results on the pitch that matter. I hope I can win over the few doubters I have. The vast majority of what I've seen is positive."
Bruce believes being from the north east will give him an advantage, adding: "It's a working class area. It was born in me and bred in me that I only got there with hard work. I wasn't blessed with any huge ability. I got there with a bit of hard graft and a bit of determination and I want my team to mirror that."

stupid phil k peter reid took us to 7 th twice This pug face wont get us top 10 you @#$% hole
And as for northeast teams and hate, too right, Newcastle should be torn down and rebuilt red and white................
Sunderland have made a bad choice, but a season ticket holder for 40 years this season wont be going, And as for Kean the man was a muppet, he is a curse to life..........
Sunderland have now got one thing to look forward to, playing the scum next season in the fizzy pop leauge..........................
hope bruce stay longer with sunderland. He is the good manager but after he build the good and strong team suddenly he left. You may see next seson WIGAN will struggle in the league. I dont think so valencia, schaner, bramble, figueruao will stay there.
well he might of been black n white, but now that hes seen the LIGHT he a born again red and white FANatic... good luck steeve, and hard luck sheeeeeeeeera
ashleyliam2 has not got a clue. bruce needs a chance and if he mucks up i will eat me hat.
You know what I am sick of all this crud about Geordies, Anybodys a Geordies if you are from the north east. The term Geordie surfaced more than 100 years before the Football league even formed, its about mining and lamps and kings and stuff, nothing whatsoever to do with kicking a ball about. The Black & Whites(the Mags) hijacked the term and the media have band waggoned it. Steve Bruce is a Geordie just like the rest of us blessed to be born up here, he wastnt my first choice, but now we have him lets get behind him , the last one done well for us,
You lot don't know when your well off, thick as you are
Steve Bruce might not have been my first choice but clearly he was Niall's (in whom we trust) and going from the press conference Niall has had him in mind for some time (I daresay since Keono did a Keegan). Having had tiome to reflect, we should give Bruce time - let's judge him on his transfer activity and where we end up come next May (higher up the table than this season I predict). Moreover, I'm old enough to remember Stokoe being appointed and that he was not met with universal open arms given his Black and White past. That soon changed though and remember, he even played during their 1950's glory years as well as being a fan, at least Bruce only made the mistake of being a boyhood fan and he has twice turned down approaches to manage them - that'll do for me. Also we won the FA Cup under Stokoe and now have a statue in his honour ouside the Stadium (beside which Steve Bruce was photographed yesterday - see The Journal, Northern Echo etc. etc).
So we have a Chairman in whom we trust, an owner who makes Abramovich look small fry and a manager with 1 years managerial experience including many in the Premiership. Rejoice, don't snipe. After all The Skunks can only dream of being where we are: they're in the Championship staring down into League One, don't know who mtheir Chairman is, the Owner is trying to flog the club to any Tom @#$% or Mustafa in Dubai and Mary Poppins (with little managerial experience) is now baulking at the idea of becoming their permanent manager. Ho! Hum! What fun!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
HAWAY THE LADS! We're On Our Way, On Our Way, In the Premier, All The Way!!

Phil K---you're wasting your breath trying to stop NE fans slagging each other off or trying to get them to respect each other no matter which club they belong to. I've been saying the same for years--I've been a Sunderland supporter for 60 years---
but I have also supported all NE clubs in Europe --any British club in fact--because I'm a football fan and not JUST a Sunderland fan. I was born midway between Sunderland and Newcastle so I had a choice and made it stuck to it through thick and --mostly--thin! I don't think Bruce is the right choice---Sparky Hughs for me--but now we're stuck with him I give him his chance and he gets my support. Wait and see, but I think he'll be gone if it gets tough--and it'll be tougher if S'land get off to a good start.
Keeping the momentum is always hard.
SEAHAM RED STAR PETER REID COULD NOT MANAGE SO KEEP QUIET AND GIVE STEVE BRUCE A CHANCE HE WILL DO WELL AT THE LIGHT YOU WILL SEE IF NOT HOWARD WILKINSON IS FREE TO COME BACK
ashley your a typical mackem...thick as @#$% and forty faced.
Steve Bruce is the BEST manager your club has appointed, name me a better one?
This guy is the latest generation manager with added bonus of experience at the highest level as a player...unlike Keane (who you turned against after a run of bad luck) Bruce has shown he can manage well at smaller clubs than Blunderland.
I wish he had been signed by Newcastle where im sure he would be a great success there too...you should put aside this petty hatred between north east clubs.
Your getting a great manager and mark my words Ashley this time next year you'll be singing his praises just like 30,000 other two faced sunderland supporters who only go to acually support the club in the good times....
You should be proud that lads from the north east..manage north east clubs...celebrating other north east clubs demise and the loss of revenue to the region is stupidity
Peter reid was a @#$% manager and ruined sunderland like he has every club his been to..your in denial mate cos im sure you remember empty stands towards the end of his reign ...in dark times your the only north east club supporters that desert your club
STEVE BRUCE IS TOO GOOD FOR YOU LOT
Give the man a chance
go away bruce join that lot up the road................... were you belong, how can we say this is a move forward, bring back Peter Reid, he cared about the club and fans, better than this joke.
Seaham Red Star for me next season, local team, local lads, and a local Manager.
