Martinez poised for Celtic talks

Wed, 03 Jun 09:39:52 2009

Swansea manager Roberto Martinez is expected to discuss Celtic's approach with his employers when he returns from holiday later on Wednesday.

Celtic's initial request to interview Martinez was rebuffed but Swans chairman Huw Jenkins has admitted he will not stand in the Spaniard's way if he insists on meeting Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell.

The 35-year-old appears destined to do so after apparently saying "any young, aspiring manager with ambition would be interested in a job like that."

But Wigan's impending managerial hunt could scupper any hopes Celtic maintain of luring the former Motherwell midfielder, who led Swansea to the Coca-Cola League One title in his first full season and then eighth place in the Championship.

Wigan manager Steve Bruce is negotiating personal terms with Sunderland and the compensation package from that deal would cover the four years remaining on Martinez's Swansea contract.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan has already admitted Martinez, a celebrated former Latics player, would be at the forefront of his thoughts when he begins moves to replace Bruce.

Meanwhile, a Celtic source has dismissed claims that Tony Adams is in the frame for the job as "complete garbage".

The former Portsmouth manager claimed former Hoops boss Wim Jansen was ready to take him to Parkhead if the Dutchman returned as technical director.

Adams told talkSPORT: "My good friend Wim Jansen is probably in at Celtic. It would be him as technical director and me as manager."

The former Arsenal skipper added: "I've not applied for the role. I know Wim Jansen, who has put me in there."

  1. Bilic is the only name mentioned so far that interests me too but the fact he has never managed a club side might mean he's not worth the gamble.

And it's a big gamble at that.

I feel once we take the green tinted specs off (or blue if yer a gers fan) we aint nearly as appealing as we'd like to think.

The spl has a 'this town aint big enough for the both of us' way to it and if it isn't the Tic manager who's head the fans demand it would be the Gers one. Bit sad but it's just the way many fans who criticise without responsibilty feel the game should be.

  2. other end. JVoH had a face like fizz and i am pretty sure he and boruc had a bust up. league form went totally t*ts up from then on in and i am convinced that's why we lost the league. there is no paranoia or conspiracy theories here; Its simply what i observed.
we need someone who will bring discipline back to the team and i cant see someone of 35 being experienced enough to do this. I think that martinz is a cheap option for the board. i find it difficult to believe that celtic are in a battle with wigan for this guy. wigan!! there need to be wholesale changes at celtic from top to bottom and nobody should consider their position as safe. a well known european would also be a boost to morale ahead of two very difficult champs league qualifiers. if we were to put out the team we have at the moment i honestly cant see us qualifying and that scares me as there in no europa league parachute.
I love celtic as much as you do and that gives me the right to voice my opinions in the way i have. i think i have answered your points george, if not tell me.

  3. how ya doing george,
considering the remit that strachan had when he came the guy worked wonders. he was told he had extremely limited budget, he had to get rid of the older players and bring in homegrown talent and he was told to slash the wage bill. the guy did remarkably well when you look at this. celtic are now financially sound and any business has to speculate to accumulate, but i'm not suggesting for a second that they should spend ridiculous sums of money. rangers tried that and are now in £40 million debt, paul g can you clarify this?
a well known european manager with experience and a decent reputation would be in the position where he was able to entice better players to celtic based on his experience and reputation and champions league football every year either through going straight into the group stages or through qualifying. Since his name was mentioned last week I have stated in every post that slaven bilic would be a fabulous signing as manager. he was a very well respected player and as a relatively young manager he's already taken croatia to the semi's. celtic are luckier than rangers at the moment as they can afford to go that wee bit extra financially, so if he wants to give it a try why not? i would much rather have him that martinez based on the above facts. look at the players who have been given frees so far this season. who would have the better chance of signing them martinez or bilic? if i were a player i know who i would choose. croatia has recently been a war zone so he would be able to cope with an old firm game!! being serious, there are problems and friction between the celtic players and i think that was one of the reasons strachan left. that and the amount of hostility he had to endure from his own fans. i was on the same flight as the first team coming back from murcia at the end of march and their body language was awful. boruc went to one end of the airport on his own and the rest of the team were at

  4. What do you suggest happens NOT to finish 3rd or 4th in the group frankie??

Spend 50 million euros on 3 players like Shaktar did and still finish bottom?

No previous European experience is needed either. Only managers who haven't worked outside Scotland need euro previous.

Look at Strachan... the guy had 5 minutes in Europe with Southampton but yet he's the only manager outside the top 5 leagues to qualify twice in succession for the last 16.

why cant they work it out?
the celtic board has let the fans down again.
does anyone find this last sentence familiar??

  7. this is a very bad move by celtic. as usual taking he cheaper option. no club wants to be, or really should be in debt, but what is the point of having a bank balance in the black if you have a rotten team on the pitch?
the tony adams thing is a joke not even the celtic board would go for that one.
we deserve a winning team with a manager with european experience otherwise we are destined to always be third or fourth in our group, that is assuming we get there. this appointment will gift the title and european maney to rangers for the next four years or until he gets the sack.
we deserve so much better than this. does the board think we are all stupid? telling we will get the best manager available and what do we get? a manager who is younger than half the rangers team, no european experience and no top flight experience. eighth in the english championship is hardly the best available to this club surely.
the iscuit tin mentality is still alive, well and refusing to be dragged into the twenty first century.
i have always advocated that "celtic mindedness" was completely irrelevent in choosing a manager; there is any number of mature managers with european experience available, why not go for onr of them. Take the republic of ireland as an example. they took a chance with trappatoni's appointment and they have never looked back.the other side of the coin is bertie mcvogts of course! we need someone of trappatoni's ilk and not some lad who was manager of a team in a sunday league before last season.
i really hope i am wrong about all this, i would be delighted to come on here at this time next year and say that i got it wrong, but somehow i dont think it'll happen.
celtic fans again are being treated with total disrespect by a board whose heads are so far up their own *rses that they can see daylight out their ears and see loyal fans who pay between £400 and £6oo for season tickets as nothing more than a cash cow, there only to pay
